Chapter One

Welcome to Madame Adel Mansion

The carriage rolled slowly along a narrow road

that wound through the dark forest surrounding

Annecy.

The rhythmic sound of horses' hooves echoed

beneath the pale moonlight.

Somewhere in the distance, a wolf howled.

Sitting quietly by the carriage window was

eighteen-year-old Mandy. Her

raspberry-colored hair was tied into two neat

pigtails, framing her youthful round face.

Although moonlight spilled across the trees

outside, all she could see was endless

darkness.

She tightened her grip on the white envelope

resting in her lap.

At last, the carriage came to a stop.

The cabman opened the door.

"We've arrived, Miss."

Mandy stepped onto the frozen ground,

carrying her large brown suitcase.

Annecy was far colder than Paris.

"Have a nice day."

"Thank you. You too."

The cabman cracked his whip, and the carriage

disappeared into the mist.

She stopped before the black iron gate.

The old stone walls rose like ancient giants

guarding the lonely estate.

Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm herself,

but her heart pounded like a drum.

Her pale hand trembled as she reached out and rang the bell.
