Welcome to my new cooking series 🤪
This is a super simple and effective way to use up those extra tomatoes hanging around. Very beginner friendly with lots of room to adjust the flavor as you like it 😊
Using fresh tomatoes from your garden is a fantastic way to ensure your tomato sauce bursts with natural flavor. When preparing your tomato sauce, try experimenting with different tomato varieties such as Roma, cherry tomatoes, or even mixing in bell peppers for added depth. Roasting the tomatoes before blending enhances their sweetness and helps soften their texture, making it easier to remove the skins if desired. A handy tip is to blanch your tomatoes briefly in boiling water and then plunge them into an ice bath. This technique loosens the skin, allowing you to peel them off effortlessly. After roasting, using an immersion blender lets you control the sauce’s smoothness—blend until you reach your desired consistency. Herbs play a crucial role in elevating homemade tomato sauce. Fresh herbs like basil, oregano, thyme, or parsley harvested directly from your herb garden add vibrant aroma and taste. Chop them finely and add in the last minutes of roasting or just before simmering to retain their fresh flavor. To balance acidity and enhance the sauce’s taste, a small amount of sugar can be added during the cooking process. Simmer your sauce until it thickens to your preference, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Using quality fat like olive oil, butter, or tallow to sauté ingredients or melt in the pan imparts extra richness to your sauce. This beginner-friendly method opens the door to endless customization and encourages you to experiment with flavors, textures, and herbs. Whether you use it as a pasta sauce or a base for other dishes, your homemade tomato sauce will always be a comforting and fresh addition to your meals.
