San Juan Puerto Rico El Morro

My trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico, wouldn't have been complete without a visit to the iconic El Morro fortress! Standing majestically at the entrance to San Juan Bay, this isn't just any old fort; it's officially part of the San Juan National Historic Site, and walking through its ancient passages really makes history come alive. I was completely blown away by the sheer scale of it, and the breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean are something you have to see to believe. If you're planning your own adventure, here's what I learned that might help you make the most of your visit. First, let's talk about visitor hours. These can sometimes change seasonally, so my top tip is always to check the official National Park Service website for the San Juan National Historic Site before you go. Generally, it opens around 9:00 AM and closes around 4:30 PM, but confirming in advance will save you any disappointment. I found going early in the morning right when it opens was fantastic. Not only did I beat the heat, but I also got to explore the massive historic stone walls and ramparts with fewer crowds, making it feel even more personal and awe-inspiring. Plus, the light for photos was just perfect! Once you're inside, prepare to be transported back in time. El Morro, or officially Castillo San Felipe del Morro, is a marvel of Spanish military engineering. I loved wandering through the different levels, imagining soldiers guarding the coastline. Don't miss the sentry boxes (garitas) that dot the fortress; they offer some of the most scenic views. The grassy esplanade leading up to the main entrance is also a highlight – it’s a perfect spot for flying kites, and you’ll often see families enjoying the open space there. Beyond the incredible history and architecture, there are practical things to keep in mind. Wear comfortable walking shoes – you'll be doing a lot of exploring on uneven surfaces. Bring plenty of water, especially if you're visiting in the afternoon, as the Caribbean sun can be intense. Sunscreen and a hat are also non-negotiable. I spent a good three to four hours just soaking it all in, so allow ample time. There's so much to discover, from the lighthouse to the barracks, and you'll want to take your time to appreciate every corner of this incredible piece of Puerto Rican heritage. Visiting El Morro truly was a highlight of my Puerto Rico trip. It's more than just a historical landmark; it's an experience that connects you to centuries of stories and offers unparalleled beauty.
