Benefits of tummy time

Muscle development:

Strengthens neck muscles for head control, as well as shoulder and back muscles needed for rolling, sitting, and crawling.

Prevent flat head syndrome:

By encouraging movement and repositioning, tummy time helps to avoid the development of a flat spot on the back of the head.

Improved coordination:

Promotes better body awareness and muscle control, enhancing overall movement abilities.

Sensory stimulation:

Exposes babies to different textures and visual perspectives while on their tummy.

Cognitive development:

May contribute to improved cognitive skills by encouraging exploration and engagement with their environment.

You can start tummy time as early as day one of your new baby's life.

Start early:

Begin tummy time with newborns for short periods, gradually increasing duration as they get stronger. I did a lot of tummy time with my daughter while having her lay down on top of me for as long as she could tolerate it.

By engaging in tummy time right from birth, infants not only build muscle strength but also enhance motor skills crucial for milestones like crawling and sitting. It's important to create a positive tummy time experience; this can involve lying down with your baby or using toys to encourage a playful environment. Regularly varying the surface, like using a soft mat or blanket, can keep the experience stimulating. Additionally, tummy time fosters sensory exploration, as babies interact with different textures and views that they wouldn't experience while lying on their backs. In case your baby shows signs of discomfort during tummy time, like fussing or crying, it's best to pause and try again later, ensuring a stress-free experience. Always monitor your baby closely during tummy time, as supervision is key to safety. By embracing tummy time, you're giving your baby the foundation for a healthier and more engaging development journey.
