I’m having a major quarter-life crisis moment.
Guys, listen!
My parents have always been incredibly supportive. They paid for my undergrad, send me monthly checks, and even cover my rent while I finish grad school. But lately I’ve been feeling like a total mooch. I want to break free and build my own life, but I’m stuck in analysis paralysis. I’m interested in tech or healthcare (maybe medical device sales or biotech startups?), but I have zero professional experience beyond internships. I’ve been cold-emailing companies for entry-level roles, but hearing crickets.
Any advice on:
1) finding remote/hybrid positions that accept career changers
2) certifications that actually add value
3) overcoming imposter syndrome when everyone around me seems way more qualified?
I’m even open to unpaid gigs if they lead to something. Please don’t let me waste another year of my 20s!
Transitioning from financial dependence on parents to self-sufficiency can be daunting, especially during a quarter-life crisis. It's essential to explore various paths in the tech and healthcare sectors, especially in roles like medical device sales and biotech startups. To tackle the challenge of finding remote or hybrid positions, utilize online platforms such as LinkedIn, Indeed, and Glassdoor, where many employers are open to career changers and entry-level candidates, making it easier for you to break into a new industry. Certification programs in relevant fields can offer immense value and credibility, even without prior experience. Research popular certifications such as Certified Medical Device Sales Representative (CMDSR) or relevant healthcare IT certifications to enhance your employability. Additionally, consider networking through industry-specific online communities or LinkedIn groups to connect with professionals willing to provide insights and mentorship opportunities. Overcoming imposter syndrome is crucial during this transition. Surround yourself with supportive peers, join communities of like-minded individuals, and remember that everyone starts somewhere. Embrace a growth mindset, recognizing that skills can be developed over time and that collaboration is key in the learning process. Engaging in unpaid internships or volunteer opportunities can also offer practical experience and prove beneficial in enhancing your resume while providing valuable networking connections. With determination and the right strategies, you can navigate this critical phase and successfully build your life in your 20s!

My parents also supported me through my undergrad and thankfully when I graduated I was in a much better market and was able to get an offer from my internship. However I had internally told myself if I wasn’t getting any interviews then I was gonna get a part time job even if it wasn’t in my field and pay my parent’s some rent and help out with bills and groceries. This market is hard, but just keep trying, and see if there are any free professional development events near you. Also, kinda what I did was even though I also wanted to work in biotech, I settled for a tech job in a different industry, so definitely stay open minded to other fields.
