Hey fellow travelers! So, I just got back from an amazing trip to Rome, and let me tell you, it was epic – but not without a few learning curves! Before I went, I scoured guides for "what not to do in Rome," and honestly, some advice saved me a ton of hassle. I want to share my personal take on those common 'NG actions' (as they say!) that can really make or break your trip. Trust me, avoiding these will elevate your Roman adventure from good to absolutely unforgettable. First off, Don't eat at restaurants right next to major attractions. This was a big one for me! My first day, after visiting the Colosseum, I was starving and just popped into the nearest trattoria. Big mistake! The food was mediocre, overpriced, and clearly designed for tourists. I learned quickly to venture a few blocks away, down those charming side streets. That's where you'll find authentic, delicious, and much more reasonably priced pasta and pizza. Ask a local or check out reviews on your phone – you won't regret seeking out those hidden gems! Secondly, Don't forget to book popular attractions in advance. Oh, the queues! Stood in line for what felt like forever at the Vatican Museums, wishing I'd just spent five minutes online beforehand. Seriously, for places like the Colosseum, Vatican, or Borghese Gallery, pre-booking your tickets online is a non-negotiable. It saves you hours of precious sightseeing time, especially during peak season. You can grab a coffee and waltz right past those long lines – a true game-changer! My third tip is, Don't underestimate the importance of comfortable shoes. Rome is a city meant for walking, and you'll be doing a lot of it! Cobblestone streets are beautiful but brutal on your feet if you're wearing flimsy sandals or stylish but impractical shoes. I packed a pair of trendy sneakers, and they were my best friends. My feet thanked me every evening. There’s nothing worse than sore feet cutting your exploration short. Fourth on my list of 'NG' moves: Don't forget to validate your public transport tickets. This is a simple one, but easily overlooked, and it can lead to hefty fines! Whether you're taking the metro or a bus, always make sure to validate your ticket in the machines provided before or immediately upon boarding. I saw a few tourists get caught out, and it's just not worth the stress or the money. A quick swipe, and you're good to go! Finally, and this is a crucial one, Don't only stick to the main tourist hotspots. While the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain are absolute must-sees, Rome has so much more to offer beyond the postcard views. I stumbled upon the charming Trastevere neighborhood one evening and found myself lost in its narrow, winding alleys, discovering artisan shops and incredible local eateries. Or consider a visit to the Appian Way for a historical bike ride. These off-the-beaten-path experiences often become the most memorable parts of your trip. So, wander, explore, and let Rome surprise you! Avoiding these common pitfalls means more time enjoying the magic of Rome and fewer "I wish I had known that" moments.
