🇵🇹Core Memories | part1

I don't know if they'll post blurry or not😩 but:

1. The "Whale Tail" sculpture. I was always too scared to walk up to it and touch it because I thought it would move.

2. Colombo Mall. Forever my favorite mall. Has a mini amusement park / arcade / bowling alley on the inside (3rd floor to be specific). 100/10 highly recommend

3. CAISL. My school for grades 2-4! Best school I've ever been to🙌🏾

4. NATO. From school to my mom's job but that army base was my entire playing field

5. Olá.... every time I saw that brand it equates to me getting ice cream😁

I lived in Portugal from 6-10 years old (actually 2mo before my 10th birthday) so most of my memories are probably more valuable to that age group😂

... Read moreIt's funny how certain outdoor spots just stick with you from childhood. For me, the 'Whale Tail' sculpture in Portugal was one of those unforgettable landmarks. I remember thinking it was alive, and that fear just added to its magic. Every time we passed it, whether on a walk with my parents or a school trip, I'd stare in awe. It was always a challenge to see how close I could get without actually touching it – a silly game, but one that’s a vivid outdoor memory! These kinds of public art pieces, often found near scenic waterfronts or large open spaces in Lisbon, really spark a child's imagination and are perfect for creating those 'core memories outdoors.' And then there was the NATO army base. Oh my goodness, that place was an absolute playground! When my mom was at work, that base became my entire world. It wasn't just a place; it was an adventure waiting to happen every day. The OCR mentioned the 'strawberry patch,' and I can still taste those sweet, sun-warmed little berries we'd sneak. We'd spend hours on the 'soccer field,' chasing balls and making up our own rules, or practicing our swings on the 'tennis courts.' There were even 'stray cats' we’d try to befriend – little furry companions on our outdoor escapades. And the 'free grilled cheeses'? Those weren't just food; they were part of the outdoor picnic experience, fueling our endless energy for more play. It truly felt like an endless summer camp, all within the safe confines of the base, yet so full of natural exploration and freedom to roam. Thinking back, Portugal is just perfect for creating these kinds of outdoor core memories. Beyond the specific places I mentioned, there are so many opportunities for kids to just be outside. The beautiful beaches, like those easily accessible from Lisbon, offer endless sandcastles and wave-chasing. Imagine the joy of discovering tide pools or simply feeling the warm sand between your toes! The city's numerous parks, with their incredible playgrounds and wide-open spaces, are fantastic for burning off energy. Places like Parque Florestal de Monsanto or Parque Eduardo VII offer green oases perfect for picnics, bike rides, or just letting kids run wild. Even just wandering through the historic Alfama district with its narrow streets, hidden courtyards, and stunning viewpoints feels like an outdoor adventure. The sheer vibrancy of Portuguese street life, the Fado music drifting from open doors, and the smell of roasting chestnuts in autumn all contribute to an immersive outdoor sensory experience. If you're visiting Portugal with kids, I highly recommend embracing these simple, outdoor joys. Don't just stick to the indoor attractions. Let them explore, run free, and discover their own 'Whale Tails' and secret 'strawberry patches.' Pack comfortable shoes, a sense of adventure, and perhaps a small bag for collecting treasures found along the way. Whether it's a stroll along the Tagus River, a visit to a local market, or simply enjoying an ice cream (maybe an Olá!) in a sunny plaza, those are the moments they'll truly remember. Those are the ones that become their own core memories of this beautiful country, shaping their perspective for years to come. It's about experiencing the country with all your senses, especially in its wonderful outdoors.
