How is a real Yixing teapot made?

A real Yixing teapot is made completely by hand: beat the clay, wrap the body, shape the spout and handle, attach, polish with bamboo, and fire twice. No molds, no machines. Just centuries-old craft in every pot.

The term '古蜀' (Ancient Shu) featured in the teapot maker's mark is a nod to the region’s rich heritage in pottery and ceramics, deeply rooted in Chinese history. Yixing teapots are crafted exclusively from zisha clay, known for its porous nature that enhances tea's aroma and flavor over time. Each pot starts with beating the raw clay to remove air bubbles, ensuring durability during firing. The artisan then manually wraps and shapes the body, carefully forming the spout and handle to ensure balance and functionality. Polishing is done with bamboo tools, which smooth the surface without damaging the clay’s natural texture. This gentle method preserves the teapot's breathability, vital for enriching tea infusions. Finally, the double firing process not only hardens the teapot but also brings out the characteristic colors of the purple clay (“purple clay teapot”), a signature of authentic Yixing work. Owning one of these handcrafted Yixing teapots means appreciating a centuries-old technique that elevates the tea drinking experience. Every detail, from the clay preparation to the final polish, reflects an unbroken tradition handed down through generations of “壺匠” (pottery craftsmen). This hands-on approach creates not just a vessel but a living piece of art that interacts and matures with your tea rituals.
