My tips as a server

First post!!!!!!

... Read moreIt's fascinating how many people wonder about server tips – it's definitely a rollercoaster! After my very first post showing some of my recent tip outs, I wanted to dive a little deeper into what goes into earning those tips, from the average amounts like $6.39 or $8.48 to those incredible 'Holy shiz!' moments like that $50.00 tip on a $124.41 bill. It's not just about luck; there's a real art to it. One of the biggest factors in maximizing tips, I've found, is genuine hospitality. It sounds simple, but a warm greeting, remembering details about your guests, and anticipating their needs can make a huge difference. I always try to connect with my tables, whether it’s recommending a favorite dish or just making them feel comfortable. For example, when I got that $15.00 tip on a $72.65 check, or the $22.00 on an $87.76 total – both 'a little over 20%' – it felt like a direct reflection of making the dining experience special. People appreciate feeling seen and well taken care of. Another thing I've learned is to 'read the table.' Some guests are in a hurry, others want to linger, and some are celebrating. Adjusting your service style to fit their vibe is key. You might have a table that only leaves a few dollars, like that $5.18, and then you have the generous souls who make your night with a $50.00 tip. It’s all part of the job, and you learn not to take the lower tips personally, but rather to focus on giving your best to every guest. Sometimes you get a $0.00 tip, and it stings, but then the next table might surprise you. Keeping track of my earnings is also super important. Seeing the digital screens with amounts like $32.50, $40.71, or even just $9.29 helps me understand my average earnings per shift and per hour. It’s not always easy, especially on busy Friday nights, but knowing where I stand financially helps me stay motivated. After all, those tips are a huge part of my income. Then there's the 'tip out' process. Many people don't realize that a portion of our tips goes to support staff – busboys, bartenders, food runners. It's an essential part of teamwork in a restaurant, and it means your gross tips aren't your net take-home. So, when I see a tip amount like $40.71, I know a percentage of that will be shared with the team who helped make the service smooth. Finally, managing my tips after a shift is crucial. On a good night, when I hit a 'decent' amount, I try to separate some for bills and some for savings or even a small treat. It’s so easy for cash to just disappear, so having a plan, even if it's just mentally, helps a lot. It makes those harder shifts, where tips are lower, feel more manageable because I know I'm working towards something. Being a server is hard work, but those moments of appreciation, especially in the form of a generous tip, truly make it rewarding. It’s a job where every day is different, and you learn so much about people and yourself.

budgeting my tips as a 20 y/o server
this week was a slower week for me, meaning i wasn’t able to quite meet my $200 into savings goal. that means i don’t add money into my ‘fun spending’ fund. and i am okay with that. what matters the most to me is that all my needs are met. but, my current method of budgeting isn’t the best.
