SC governor declares state of emergency

This seems like a good time to point out South Carolina’s starting salaries for wildland firefighters are roughly 30% below the national average, at $32,000 annually, and republicans have repeatedly decided against adding more fire personnel.

Additionally, DOGE has cut staffing at US Forestry Service by 3,400 people so far. Because somehow the notoriously understaffed Foresters making 40-50k a year are the problem with our government. The people who run the management programs, timber sales, and invasives management for our public forest resources and who help coordinate wildfire responses and controlled burns are the people who aren't necessary in the eyes of the Elon.

... Read moreIn recent weeks, South Carolina has faced unprecedented challenges due to escalating wildfires. The state's starting salaries for wildland firefighters have come under scrutiny, being approximately 30% below the national average at around $32,000 annually. This discrepancy raises concerns about the ability to attract and retain dedicated personnel in a critical field. Compounding the issue further is the reported reduction of staff at the U.S. Forestry Service, with around 3,400 positions eliminated. These cuts impact essential services, including the management of public forest resources, coordination of wildfire responses, and the execution of controlled burns intended to reduce wildfire risks. While some policymakers may argue that personnel cuts are necessary for efficiency, many experts highlight the importance of adequate staffing in preventing and managing wildland fires effectively. As the state grapples with the consequences of these staffing reductions, it sparks a broader conversation about the value placed on wildland firefighting and the sustainability of forest management practices. Stakeholders across the forestry community continue to advocate for improvements in compensation and resource allocation to ensure public safety and environmental stewardship.

This 🙌🏼🙌🏼 I’m glad someone is talking about it we can’t give people bare minimum to survive but then expect them to put their lives in the line every day for us, it’s just not right

This absolutely breaks my heart. Anymore there’s always a weather related crisis going on. It seems that water hits, snow hits, wind hits and repeat but on the opposite side of the country each time and it keeps phasing throughout all these cycles and ping ponging so nobody can get the real help they need. #fqtrmp
