Why is speaking Korean made fun of?

Working at a Korean BBQ spot in America, a Korean customer grilled me over my Korean: “Is it your accent, or are you just slurring? You work at a Korean restaurant so speak proper Korean. Not being from Korea isn’t an excuse.” I've been learning Korean and working this job for a year. I have hustled to learn Korean. But so many immigrants here still struggle with second languages, even after years. It hurts when people act like that. How do you cope with microaggressions about your language?

#Letschat #Asklemon8 #Stirthepot #LanguageBarriers

2025/8/24 Edited to

... Read moreLanguage barriers and accent discrimination are common issues immigrants face worldwide, especially when learning a language that is not their mother tongue. In Korean-speaking communities abroad, such as Korean BBQ restaurants in America, non-native speakers often experience rigorous scrutiny about their language skills, which can lead to microaggressions that affect self-esteem and communication confidence. The term 'microaggressions' refers to subtle, often unintentional, discriminatory comments or behaviors that undermine a person's identity or experience. In the context of language learning, this can manifest as criticism of one's accent, grammar, or pronunciation—sometimes harshly framed as a failure to speak 'proper' Korean despite one’s effort. Accent bias negatively impacts language learners by reinforcing stereotypes that one must have a native-level accent to be accepted, ignoring the reality that language acquisition is a complex and individual process. This bias not only alienates speakers but can also discourage them from practicing the language and integrating more deeply into the community. Coping with such challenges requires a combination of personal resilience and community support. Language learners can benefit from building supportive networks with fellow learners and native speakers who appreciate the learning journey rather than judge imperfections. Additionally, raising awareness about the diversity of language proficiency and challenging the notion that only native-level fluency is valid can promote inclusivity. Encouraging positive communication environments within workplaces, like Korean BBQ spots, fosters respect and understanding. Employers and coworkers can contribute by practicing patience and providing constructive feedback instead of criticism. Finally, it’s important to recognize that everyone’s language learning path is unique. Embracing imperfections as part of the learning process can empower individuals to continue improving their Korean skills without fear of ridicule. Respectful dialogue about language barriers (#LanguageBarriers) and shared experiences (#Letschat, #Asklemon8) can further help reduce stigma and promote empathy across cultures.

That’s exactly how I feel, I have a slight accent when I speak English and people always have the nerve to say, this is how is pronounced. But 9 times out of 10, the people that correct me only speak 1 language which is English 🤦🏻‍♀️. Oh by the way I speak 3 languages, so my brain is always on translation mode 🥴
