I blew $400 on dog food last week…

I just can’t seem to stop splurging on myself, I have no clue why I can’t get a grip. Like, last week, I peeked at my bank account, saw there was money there, and next thing I know, I dropped $400 on dog food for my pup. And get this, we still had a ton of dog food left at home! I didn’t even need to buy that much.

Every single time there’s cash in my account, I get this overwhelming urge to spend it. There’s always something new calling my name... Seriously, anything I lay eyes on feels like a must-have. Shopping just feels so insanely fun while I’m doing it, but the second I’m done, I’m sitting there regretting.

I’ve tried to hold back, but it’s like my brain goes: “Spend now, worry later!” And then I end up with bags full of stuff I don’t really need. Am I the only one who struggles with this? I’m desperate for tips here.

... Read moreImpulse spending, especially when you see money in your account, is a common challenge many face. This urge can be linked to emotional triggers or psychological patterns, where the brain seeks immediate gratification, often at the expense of later regret. In fact, as the OCR text suggests, "Every time I see money in my account, I just wanna spend it," highlighting a compulsive impulse that can interfere with budgeting and financial security. One effective method to curb this spending impulse is to create a detailed budget that limits discretionary spending. By setting specific financial boundaries, you can reduce the temptation to splurge. Additionally, consider implementing a cooling-off period before making non-essential purchases—a simple rule like waiting 24-48 hours can give you time to evaluate if the purchase is truly necessary. Another helpful strategy involves mindful shopping. By paying attention to the reasons behind each purchase, you can distinguish between wants and needs. For example, buying $400 worth of dog food when a significant amount remains at home suggests an emotional or impulsive trigger rather than a genuine need. Furthermore, tracking your expenses regularly can make you more aware of your spending habits, helping you spot patterns and avoid unnecessary buys. Apps or journals work well for this purpose. Seeking support from friends or communities, such as those tagged #Letschat or #ShoppingAddictLife, can provide encouragement and accountability. Sometimes, professional help from a financial advisor or therapist might be necessary if the urge to spend is overwhelming. Remember, overcoming impulse spending is a gradual process. Acknowledging your tendency and using practical tools can empower you to gain control over your finances and reduce that post-shopping regret.

Lol that is so crazy. I have a small dog and I try to spend less than $40 on his food every single month. I’ve been trying free trials online. Because it’s so expensive these days.

the choice is crazy but i mean same 😭😭 i spent 250 to splurge on my ferret cause i wanted to redo his cage, then bought more stuff so probably like 300 in ferret stuff (even tho he had a bunch of stuff already)- anytime i go to walmart for groceries i end up eyeing the clothes and wanna walk around the whole store to “look” at stuff, then end up buying a bunch of unnecessary stuff- and when i first moved to college, i was too lazy to walk my laundry to the laundry mat, so i was buying more underwear and socks every other week so i didn’t have to do my laundry yet 😭
