People do it just for... your entertainment?
I fish and hunt with my dad, so this isn’t some anti-outdoors take. But today, out on the water with my dad, I couldn’t stop thinking the catch and release fishing is just animal cruelty.
Think about what happens! You cast a line, drive a hook through a fish’s mouth, make it fight for its life to get free. Then you yank it out of the water, where it can’t breathe. If it swallowed the hook, you’re tearing up its throat or mouth just to get it out, then toss it back wounded, all for your fun?
I fish to keep what I catch for food. All meat we eat hurts the animals it comes from. But that’s how predation works, it’s for survival, not just killing time. Today, watching guys nearby catch fish just to throw them back? It felt wrong. Am I the only one who sees that?
Catch and release fishing is often promoted as a conservation-friendly practice, but many anglers and animal welfare advocates are reexamining its ethical implications. When a fish is caught and then released, it may suffer injuries from the hook piercing its mouth or throat. Even if released quickly, the fish experiences intense stress fighting to escape, and removal from water interrupts its ability to breathe, which can cause lasting harm or death. Studies have shown that many fish released during catch and release fishing do not survive or suffer delayed mortality due to infection or trauma caused by the hook. The presence of barbed hooks or deeply swallowed hooks increases the risk of injury. Anglers sometimes use barbless hooks to help minimize harm, but the stress of capture remains significant. For many, including the author who fishes primarily for sustenance, this raises a moral dilemma. While consuming caught fish aligns with natural predation and survival needs, catching fish merely for sport or entertainment—and then releasing them—may not respect the welfare of the animals. The practice can be viewed less as conservation and more as using fish life for amusement without regard for their suffering. If you enjoy fishing but care about animal welfare, consider alternatives such as fishing for food only or using techniques that reduce harm. Advocates encourage educating anglers on responsible practices, including minimizing fight time and handling fish gently. Additionally, supporting regulations that protect fish populations and habitats helps ensure sustainable fishing without unnecessary animal suffering. Ultimately, reflecting on catch and release fishing through the lens of compassion and respect for wildlife can lead to more mindful outdoor activities. What do you think? I don’t like catch a release either. I feel so bad like does it hurt the fish and are they scarred for the rest of their life 😢 I feel like a lot of normal things and animal cruelty these days
