I feel like AI is replacing our jobs

Our team’s been killing it all year. Management had meeting after meeting praising us, pulling up flowcharts and graphs showing we’re bringing in more money than ever. For real, one new hire’s been hitting 3x the monthly revenue goal consistently, and the rest of us (me included) are crushing at least 2x our targets every month.

Then upper management called a meeting this week and dropped it. No merit raises this year. Why? They’re putting all that money into artificial intelligence instead. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad I still have a job, for now. But it stings. We’re busting our butts to make the company more profitable, and the reward’s zilch cause AI’s taking the budget.

Everyone talks about AI eliminating jobs, but no one’s talking about how it’s nixing promotions or raises. Consider this your heads up. It’s happening. Thoughts?

Read moreMany employees across various industries are noticing a disturbing trend: despite strong individual and team performance, merit raises and promotions are being frozen as companies funnel funds into AI technology. This shift reflects a larger strategic move where businesses invest heavily in artificial intelligence to automate processes, enhance productivity, and reduce long-term labor costs. While AI adoption promises innovation and efficiency, the immediate consequence is often a tightened budget for employee compensation, which can lower morale and increase job insecurity. The phrase from the image, "My workplace axed all raises this year because of AI," succinctly captures a widespread sentiment. Workers find themselves excel at their roles, sometimes exceeding targets by multiple folds, and yet face stagnant wages because resources are reallocated to AI development rather than workforce rewards. This situation raises important questions about how companies balance technological advancement with fair employee recognition. Moreover, the impact extends beyond just financial compensation. When raises and promotions are withheld, career growth opportunities shrink, causing frustration and a growing sense of being undervalued. The pressure on employees to perform exceptionally, without tangible rewards, can lead to burnout. The dialogue around AI’s role in eliminating jobs is widespread, but less talked about is the subtle replacement effect—AI cutting into budgets for raises and improvements in work conditions. For employees navigating this evolving landscape, it's crucial to stay informed about how AI integrations are being managed within their organizations. While AI might augment certain job functions rather than eliminate roles outright, the economic redistribution toward these technologies might delay or limit monetary benefits for staff. Open communication with management about future raise prospects and career pathways can help mitigate uncertainty. On a personal level, advocating for transparency and fair reward systems as AI becomes a larger part of business strategy is important. Employees can also seek upskilling opportunities to remain valuable in AI-enhanced workplaces, ensuring they adapt rather than become obsolete. Understanding that AI investment is reshaping the employment reward system prepares workers for upcoming challenges and helps foster constructive discussions on balancing technological progress with employee welfare.
