What part of womanhood do we never talk about?

The unspoken horrors of childbirth and its irreversible (or nearly impossible to fix) effects. Becoming a mom flips your brain chemistry upside down. Every year, I learn more about the scary, rare but devastating things that can go wrong during delivery.

I can’t help but wonder if every first time mom to be got to see the raw, unfiltered reality of the top 15 worst physical complications? Would some hit pause? Tons of women have smooth births with zero issues. But when things go south? It’s catastrophic.

A friend’s cousin had a brain bleed during delivery that left her severely cognitively impaired. Her partner bailed soon after and now her own mom is raising the baby alone. We glorify motherhood but why do we stay silent about the life altering risks that no one warns you about?

... Read moreThe experience of childbirth is a profound and transformative event in a woman's life, yet many aspects remain taboo or under-discussed, particularly the serious physical complications that can arise. While society often celebrates the journey to motherhood, it is crucial to acknowledge that this path can sometimes carry irreversible effects on health. Many women enjoy smooth deliveries, but others face severe challenges that change their lives forever. Complications such as severe brain bleeds, as mentioned in the article, are rare but catastrophic when they occur. These events can result in lasting cognitive impairments and significant lifestyle changes, affecting not only the mother but also her family and support system. Understanding the top 15 worst physical complications during delivery can empower expecting mothers and their families to make informed decisions. These complications may include hemorrhages, infections, uterine rupture, severe preeclampsia, and nerve damage, among others. Unfortunately, these risks are often overshadowed by the more commonly shared positive birth stories. Moreover, the neurochemical changes triggered by childbirth profoundly impact the mother's brain, potentially altering mood and cognition. Postpartum challenges such as depression and anxiety are linked to these biochemical shifts and can exacerbate the difficulties faced from physical complications. Open discussions and education about the realities of childbirth would help to dismantle the stigma and silence surrounding maternal health risks. If expecting mothers were more aware of these potential outcomes, they might better advocate for their care or be more prepared to seek immediate help if complications arise. Support systems play a critical role following such life-altering events. As illustrated by the personal story shared, the withdrawal of a partner in the face of these challenges adds emotional and practical burdens to the mother, emphasizing the need for broader social support frameworks. Highlighting these truths does not diminish the beauty and joy of motherhood but rather paints a fuller picture that respects the complexity of every woman's journey. Encouraging honest conversations about these hidden risks could lead to better maternal healthcare policies, improved support programs, and greater empathy for mothers navigating these difficult experiences. Ultimately, shedding light on the unspoken horrors of childbirth can empower women with knowledge and solidarity, fostering a more compassionate and realistic approach to womanhood and motherhood.

I mean yeah there's risks but there's risks in getting in your car every day and getting in an airplane (in my opinion) I don't have kids but I'm 16 and I have female issues that might cause me to have trouble with conception. I don't know if I'll ever have a kid or be able to but in a way I think I'd take the risk like I do every day when I drive my car. you put your life in other people's hands when you drive a car AND when you're in labor with a doctor but if I could have a little me to hold at night and love I think I'd take the risk. and I think that complications should be talked about More but not scare away young women without children
