Finding out I had the C word….*trigger warning*
In that first picture life was great. My sisters, Bestfriend and I had recently leased a commercial space because we were business owners. What’s the best way to do something you love, by doing it with the people you love. I remember this day so vividly.
I was sitting in the office with my sisters after being released from the hospital for anemia due to heavy cycles. I was feeling great this day. I went to my follow up appointment with my hematologist alone. Just thinking it was routine nothing more. I got to my appointment early and just sat in the car talking to my mom.
After checking in and being taken back to the room. The doctor and nurse came in. We had a general conversation about what went on in the hospital then he said, “well after deep diving in your labs and colonoscopy summary, we found a tumor and it is cancerous, so we need to focus now on a treatment protocol.”
My brain completely slowed down, but I held it together because I was alone and I needed to be able to understand everything he was throwing at me. I absolutely couldn’t wait to leave so I could just break down. When I got to the car the tears just wouldn’t stop flowing. I couldn’t grasp the fact that I had a neuroendocarcinoma tumor at the age of 36.
Life changed drastically. I was distraught. The only thing I could think of was my kids and what happens if I pass away. Their father passed away 7 years prior. I just couldn’t fathom leaving them here. Yes, we had family, but nobody is going to love them like me. I was angry with God. I just couldn’t understand how this happened to me. I had so many questions and no answers to none of them.
Often times when we hear the C word, we automatically assume life is over. God definitely had other plans. I was diagnosed October 8th, 2020 and had the tumor removed January 11, 2021. I have been cancer free for three years and I pray that it remains that way. #cancersurvivor #cancer #beautifulsurvivor #godsplan
Receiving a cancer diagnosis is often a life-altering event that brings a range of emotions, including fear, anger, and uncertainty. The term 'cancer' can evoke the idea of a death sentence, yet many survivors, like myself, find hope and health after such news. It’s important to understand that advancements in medical treatment have greatly improved survival rates. Early detection is crucial; regular check-ups and being aware of changes in your body can lead to a timely diagnosis. After my diagnosis, my focus shifted towards treatment and recovery. It became vital to have a strong support system. Family, friends, and even online communities provide immense encouragement that helps during tough times. Finding joy in small moments and pursuing activities that keep your spirits high can aid the healing process. Sharing one’s story can also be therapeutic. By opening up about experiences, we not only help ourselves but inspire others going through similar battles. Remember that you are not alone—seek support and cherish the connections in this journey. To those facing a similar path, know that hope exists beyond the diagnosis. With modern medicine continually evolving, stories of recovery are more common. Always reach out for help and make the most of every day, turning fears into fuel for a life filled with purpose and gratitude.
