They Called Us Hysterical. Now They’re Talking “Abortion Surveillance.”

Remember when women were told we were “overreacting”? Newly confirmed CDC Director Erica Schwartz called abortion surveillance a “critical component” of the CDC’s work and raised concerns about states allegedly obscuring abortion data. The CDC has collected aggregate abortion statistics for decades, but in today’s post-Roe climate, demands for expanded scrutiny deserve serious attention. Women’s healthcare must never become a weapon for control or criminalization.

... Read moreHaving followed the evolving landscape of women's reproductive rights closely, I can say that the topic of abortion surveillance brought forward by the CDC resonates deeply beyond just statistics. When healthcare data becomes a tool for government surveillance, it transforms from protection into a form of control—this undermines trust in the healthcare system. From personal conversations and community interactions, many women express fear and anxiety around seeking reproductive care, especially post-Roe. The idea that abortion data collection could be expanded is alarming because it may lead to invasive monitoring, potential legal consequences, or stigmatization. We’ve seen how historical dismissals of women's concerns as 'hysterical' were used to silence our voices, and now, similar dismissals persist under a new guise of data governance. This surveillance threatens privacy and autonomy at a fundamental level. For example, when states obscure abortion data or funnel it into large federal databases, the risk of data misuse increases. Women may avoid necessary care due to fear of governmental intrusion or legal repercussions. This is why advocacy centered on informed consent and bodily autonomy is more urgent than ever. It’s crucial for those concerned to speak up, support organizations defending reproductive freedom, and demand transparency and accountability from policymakers. Advocating for privacy protections in health data collection, especially related to reproductive health, is a form of resistance that can help safeguard women’s rights and freedom. Understanding this issue from a personal and collective perspective makes clear that reproductive surveillance is not just a political matter but a social and ethical one. The CDC’s role in abortion surveillance now invites us to critically evaluate what accountability means in a post-Roe America and how we, as individuals and communities, can assert control over our own healthcare narratives.

First They Came for Abortion. Now They’re Coming for IVF.
For years, women were told no one was coming for reproductive freedom. First abortion rights fell. Now IVF is in the crosshairs. Policies that restrict fertility treatments don’t expand freedom—they shrink it. Families struggling with infertility deserve compassion, options, and access to care, not
