Unexpected costs… are we ready?

“Was walking around Penang… then saw this 😳😂”

First reaction…

Such an old school dental chair. 😅

Then suddenly reminded me…

3 weeks ago, I just removed 2 wisdom teeth.

That tooth has been giving me problem since July 2024.

Hot, cold, normal also pain.

Went for a few x-rays, asked a few dentists…

still cannot find the exact cause.

In the end… I decided to remove it once and for all.

Honestly ah…

dentist is something I fear the most 😆

(bad experience when I was 22…)

But what hit me more was not the pain.

It was the bill.

Wah… really heart pain also.

As a freelancer… no company benefits.

No claim. No subsidy.

Everything… pay myself.

Even though I take care of my teeth quite well.

Regular check, cleaning…

Still… things happen.

And it made me think…

These kind of health costs…

we don’t really plan for one.

But as we grow older…

it will come more often right?

Not something we can avoid.

So the question is…

Are U prepared for it?

Or will it catch U off guard?

These few years, I’ve been thinking more abt this.

Not in a scary way…

just… wanting a bit more peace of mind.

And that’s also why…

I started building something on the side.

Slowly. At my own pace.

Nothing big.

But at least… it’s something I can grow over time.

Something that doesn’t fully depend on

my time or my physical energy.

Something that can support

even when unexpected things happen.

Not perfect.

Still figuring things out.

But at least now… I’m more aware.

And honestly…

thankful to God

that things were settled smoothly 💛

What abt U?

Do U think abt these kind of unexpected costs?

Or only when it happens then we start to think?

... Read moreUnexpected health expenses, like dental surgeries, can disrupt both our finances and peace of mind. As a freelancer, I understand this challenge deeply—no employer subsidies or claim options means the full cost comes straight out of your pocket. I've experienced this firsthand with wisdom tooth removal, which turned from a routine dental problem into a costly ordeal. In my journey, I learned that even with diligent dental care—regular check-ups and cleanings—unforeseen issues can arise. This reality pushed me to think beyond daily habits and focus on proactive financial planning. Building a side income stream has been part of my strategy. It's something I grow gradually, ensuring it's not dependent solely on my physical energy or hourly work. This way, when unexpected health costs hit, I have a small safety net to ease the impact. From a practical standpoint, I recommend setting up an emergency fund specifically for medical expenses. Start small if you have to—consistency matters more than amount initially. Also, consider exploring insurance options that suit freelancers; while they might have higher premiums, they can provide critical support when big bills come your way. Mentally, preparing for these costs isn't about fear but empowerment. Being aware that health expenses could come unexpectedly allows you to plan calmly rather than react in panic. It also reminds you to appreciate the moments when things go smoothly and to be grateful for the ability to manage challenges. In the end, unexpected costs are part of adulting, but how we prepare can define our financial stability and emotional well-being. Sharing this experience aims to encourage others, especially those in freelance or self-employed roles, to reflect on their own readiness and take small steps toward peace of mind.
