Be safe at concerts ya’ll!!!

Okay so it was actually not the initial stage dive that injured me….

First off - I’ve always wanted to stage dive it’s actually on my list of things I wanted to do before I turned 40 so when I saw my opportunity I went for it

The issue was that EVERYONE was stage diving.

After I went in I ended up in the front two rows and before I knew it someone jumped off the stage and elbowed me and it was in direct contact with my head

I wish I got a pic with the other girl he mashed into because she had a bump on the other side of her head it was pretty funny but ALSO scary I could’ve gotten a concussion ya’ll so please be safe and know what you’re getting into

... Read moreThe thrill of stage diving is undeniable – that moment of airborne freedom, trusting a sea of hands below you. I totally get the appeal; it looks "hardcore" and incredibly exhilarating! But as my own experience (and a friend's head injury!) unfortunately showed, that rush comes with real risks. If you're considering taking the plunge, here’s how to navigate it as safely as possible, because concert safety always comes first. First, assess the crowd. This is non-negotiable. You need a dense, energetic crowd with plenty of hands visibly raised and ready to catch you. If it’s sparse, or people look disengaged, don't jump. Landing on the floor is a quick way to ruin your night. Look for that blurry, dark concert scene with many hands reaching up – that’s your potential green light, but proceed with caution. When you're ready, think of it as a controlled "fall" or "leap" rather than a dive. Avoid flips or fancy moves. The goal is to make yourself as flat and easy to catch as possible, like a surfboard. Go feet first or flat on your back/stomach, arms out. This distributes your weight and minimizes impact. Never go headfirst; that's dangerously risky and can lead to serious injury. A person's legs in the air usually signifies a successful catch and being passed by the crowd. Once you’re caught, try to stay calm and rigid. Don't flail. The crowd will generally pass you forward towards the stage or backward. To get down, make eye contact with security or signal to those around you; they typically help you back to your feet near the barrier or out of the pit. However, and this is crucial, even with preparation, accidents happen. My friend's alarming incident of getting elbowed in the head was a stark reminder. Concussions and other head injuries are very real risks in a chaotic mosh pit. Just because "everyone was stage diving" doesn't guarantee safety. High energy, combined with alcohol or other substances, can impair judgment, making it even more hazardous. Always be sober and fully aware of your surroundings. Consider the concert's vibe: Is it a punk show known for its pits, or a mellower indie concert? Not all crowds are equipped or willing to catch a stage diver. You're placing immense trust in strangers, and while most concert-goers are amazing, accidents still occur. If stage diving feels too risky, crowd surfing offers a similar thrill with slightly less impact. You're typically passed over heads rather than dropped from a height, allowing you to still experience that floating connection with the crowd. Again, protect your head and communicate. Ultimately, concerts are about enjoying the music and atmosphere. While stage diving can be an incredible experience, prioritizing your safety, and that of others, is paramount. Have fun, be wild, but always be smart and aware. No concert high is worth a trip to the emergency room.
