Li’l review:
JP Behren’s debut novel was absolute insanity to read. I’ll avoid spoilers in this review, but if you like psychological horror that explores the dark side of the American Dream, and you like a story that you don’t quite know where it’s going until it’s THERE, this might just be the book for you. However, it’s MESSED UP messed up, in a way that is more real and visceral than other horror books (primarily splatterpunk books), so make sure you take a look at any and all trigger warnings. This book got real emotional reactions out of me - I was pissed, I was scared, I was uncomfortable.
Behrens did a fantastic job portraying the hardships of housewives. I had to look up the author because I was certain it was a woman and wanted to see if I was right. To my shock lmao, a man managed to write a believable female lead complete with hardships that most women in a relationship have felt at some point in their lives. We need more representation like this from men, and Behrens is out here proving it’s possible.

- The story? 5/5 hands down. However, I had to take off 1 star because this book could have used the delicate hand of a beta or editor. Most mistakes are easy enough to read around as they pertain to grammar and punctuation, but there are a couple instances that I just had to go, “Huh? Whatever, I’ll just skip this sentence.” For such a good story, I wish I didn’t have to be distracted by things that could have been fixed if an outsider spent some time looking for those mistakes specifically.
