We’re All Mad Here - Leann B | cringey cover, but…
I actually forget why I grabbed this book from kindle unlimited, but the premise was intriguing enough to get me past what is truly such a cringey cover imo 😅
There are definitely triggers here and it’s definitely a DARK romance. That being said, I quite enjoyed the story and the writing style wasn’t bad at all.

lots of smut, but not simply porn with plot (though it rides the line)

The White Rabbit is following me.
I can't outrun him. He's fast, he's ruthless, and if he hadn't drugged me and dragged me off to this godforsaken "Wonder" land, I might find his platinum hair and striking rose gold eyes attractive.
But here, the only wonder I've been finding is in the gaze of these beautiful men as they watch me run. Never do they try and help. No one wants to risk the wrath of Coello, the vicious White Rabbit himself.
Except Mau. The Cheshire Cat, as he calls himself. He may talk in riddles, but he's always popping up when I'm in a dire situation, whether it be with the Twins or the Caterpillar or the Mad Hatter or the Queen of Hearts. I don't know if I can trust him, but what other choice do I have?
We're All Mad Here is a reimagining of Alice in Wonderland with a spicy twist. This darker, grittier version of a classic tale will keep you as on edge as our heroine, with touches of horror and heat amidst the twisted romance. You'll love it if you prefer your enemies to lovers romance with multiple possessive, morally gray love interests who love the primal chase of their very, very "good girl."
... Read moreOkay, so let's talk about that cover for 'We're All Mad Here' by Leann Belle. I'm going to be completely honest, seeing the woman with bunny ears and a finger to her lips against that skull background, with the 'DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER...' caption, almost made me scroll right past it on Kindle Unlimited. I mean, my initial reaction was definitely 'cringey cover, but…' as my original thoughts stated. But oh my goodness, am I glad I trusted the premise and dove in! This book is a prime example of why you truly shouldn't let aesthetics dictate your reading choices, especially in the indie author scene where covers can sometimes be deceiving.
If you're searching for an 'Alice in Wonderland dark romance' or a truly unique 'Alice in Wonderland retelling,' then you absolutely need to consider Leann Belle's take. This isn't your childhood fairytale; it's a gritty, twisted, and profoundly dark reimagining where beloved characters are recast into menacing, morally gray figures. The White Rabbit, Coello, isn't a fluffy guide but a ruthless captor. Mau, the Cheshire Cat, is still enigmatic but offers a dangerous kind of salvation. Even the Twins, the Caterpillar, the Mad Hatter, and the Queen of Hearts are transformed into primal, possessive entities vying for our heroine's attention in a land aptly named 'Wonder' land, though wonder is often replaced by dread. The author does an excellent job of taking familiar elements and injecting them with a sense of horror and intense psychological intrigue, making the setting feel both familiar and utterly alien.
The 'dark romance' aspect is front and center here, leaning heavily into the 'why choose?' and 'reverse harem' tropes. Our protagonist finds herself entangled with multiple love interests, each more dangerous and alluring than the last. This isn't a light, fluffy romance; it’s an 'enemies to lovers' journey filled with a 'primal chase' where the lines between love and obsession blur. The 'spicy' level is definitely high, clocking in at 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️, meaning there's a lot of smut. However, it manages to maintain a plot that keeps you invested beyond just the explicit scenes. It rides that line of 'porn with plot' skillfully, ensuring that the relationships and character development are still paramount, even amidst the intense heat.
For readers who enjoy books that push boundaries, explore complex power dynamics, and feature possessive, morally ambiguous male leads, 'We're All Mad Here' will be a thrilling ride. It’s important to reiterate that this is a dark romance, so be mindful of the triggers mentioned in the main review. But if you're prepared for an intense, emotionally charged, and incredibly spicy journey through a Wonderland you've never imagined, then Leann Belle has crafted something truly captivating. Don't let the cover fool you; the real magic (and madness) is inside.
