Lately, I've been reflecting deeply on what 'gatekeeping culture' truly means, especially for Black communities. It’s not about exclusion for the sake of it, but about protecting the integrity and authenticity of our heritage. When I see our music, fashion, spiritual practices, or even our food traditions being co-opted without proper acknowledgment or respect, it feels like a piece of our identity is being eroded, and that hits hard. Take music, for instance. The original article touched on how African Americans are the blueprint for so many American genres – Jazz, Rock, Blues, Country, House. These aren't just styles; they are living histories, born from struggle, joy, and innovation. But how often do we see the origins minimized or even erased, with non-Black artists receiving accolades for sounds that were fundamentally developed within Black communities? It's disheartening. This isn't about saying non-Black people can't enjoy or be inspired by these sounds – it's about honoring the source, acknowledging the lineage, and ensuring that the creators and their descendants benefit and are recognized. True appreciation respects boundaries and origins. Then there’s the spiritual aspect. The article mentioned concerns about non-Black individuals leading spiritual houses that are deeply rooted in Black traditions. Our spiritual practices are sacred; they're passed down through generations, often carrying profound ancestral knowledge. When someone without that lineage or understanding attempts to commodify or lead these practices, it can dilute their power and disrespect their significance. This is where gatekeeping Black culture becomes absolutely vital – it's about safeguarding spiritual authenticity and preventing the commercialization of practices that hold deep meaning. We need to ensure that advice and guidance come from those who genuinely understand and embody these traditions. It’s a delicate balance, of course. Some might argue against gatekeeping, advocating for cultural exchange. But there's a crucial difference between respectful exchange and outright appropriation. Exchange happens when there's mutual respect, credit, and an understanding of power dynamics. Appropriation, on the other hand, often occurs when dominant cultures take elements from marginalized cultures, strip them of their original context, and profit from them, while the originators remain unacknowledged or even discriminated against for practicing their own traditions. For me, gatekeeping Black culture is an act of love, self-preservation, and a commitment to future generations. It’s about setting boundaries not to keep people out, but to protect what is intrinsically ours. It's about insisting on respect, proper attribution, and ensuring that the narrative of our contributions isn't rewritten by others. By doing so, we ensure our magic, our rhythm, and our spirit continue to thrive authentically.
