This was such a good book. I loved it and devoured it in two days.. it hit big topics of mental health but also kept me laughing and crying. The slow burn was so much tension! I have never felt that way during a book. When will these two say they love eachother?! It was pretty instant love but it naturally came and it was absolutely beautiful.. their relationship was beautiful… even though it’s a fake dating troupe I loved every second of it 😍 Jacob was so sweet and amazing … and you know what love shows up and it was ugh so good!
... Read moreIf you're anything like me, you probably grew up on a steady diet of 2000s rom-com movies – think *How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days*, *The Wedding Planner*, or even *13 Going on 30*. There's just something about that era's approach to love stories that hits different, right? Well, let me tell you, Abby Jimenez's 'Yours Truly' gave me all those nostalgic, feel-good vibes, but in book form! It’s not just a romance; it’s a full-blown cinematic experience for your mind, perfectly capturing that blend of humor, heart, and undeniable chemistry.
What struck me most was how seamlessly it blended the classic rom-com tropes we adore with a modern, heartfelt depth. The 'fake dating' scenario? Absolutely iconic, and Jimenez executes it perfectly, building that delicious slow burn tension that makes you root for the characters so hard. It’s the kind of setup that makes for hilarious misunderstandings and tender moments, just like our favorite on-screen couples navigate. But it’s not all fluff; the story bravely tackles significant topics like mental health and trauma, adding layers I truly appreciated. It’s like those 2000s rom-coms that made you laugh and shed a tear, but with even more emotional resonance and a contemporary understanding of life's complexities.
The setting, often within a bustling hospital emergency department, provides a unique and compelling backdrop. It adds a layer of realism and urgency to the characters' lives, showing them as dedicated medical professionals navigating high-stakes situations alongside their burgeoning romance. This isn't just a meet-cute; it's a story of two people finding solace and strength in each other amidst their demanding careers. Jacob, our charming leading man, isn't just a swoony love interest; as a dedicated medical professional, he's complex, caring, and deeply empathetic, much like the best leading men from our favorite movies who often had hidden depths.
And the details! Oh my goodness, the details are what make this book sing and truly transport you into their world. The heartfelt handwritten letters that connect them, the comforting presence of red velvet cupcakes in moments of stress or celebration, and even the endearing role of a loyal dog – these are the little touches that humanize the story and make their connection so tangible and sweet. Each element feels deliberately placed, building a rich tapestry of their lives. It truly feels like a beautiful 'mosaic' of moments, big and small, that form their incredible bond, much like how the best rom-coms are made up of memorable, often quirky, scenes.
I found myself devouring this book because it offered that perfect escape, much like a favorite rom-com movie marathon. If you've been searching for that particular blend of witty banter, heartwarming moments, and relatable struggles that defined the golden age of romantic comedies, but you're looking for your next great read, 'Yours Truly' is it. It captured my heart completely, pulling me into a love story that felt both instant and deeply earned. For anyone who misses the magic of those 2000s rom-coms and wants to experience it in a fresh, captivating way, this book delivers all the feels and then some. It's a reminder that truly great love stories, whether on screen or page, are timeless and can still surprise you with their depth and joy.
That was my fav quote in the book 🥺❤️
