Books that “just make sense” for our future kids

We stopped by Half Price Books yesterday and got: a book from each mama, a poetry collection from both mamas and a parenting book for us!

1. Mama S is silly, emotional and LOVES PUNS! So they got a fun board book full of “I love you” puns for reading to littles at bedtime!

2. Mama L is an aerospace engineer! So we got an engineer book to remind them that we will support and celebrate them in whatever they choose to be! Eff gender roles!

3. We began our relationship by reading a poem before bed every night, whether together or apart! Mama S loves to write poetry about Mama L and their future babies so we got a poetry collection to continue our tradition with them and read them poems before bed!

4. Of course we HAD to get a parenting book for us and this happened to be the ONLY book in the store about adoption and fostering! We don’t just want to be parents, we want to be cycle breaking, emotionally available, unconditionally supportive, trauma informed and identity affirming parents to children from the foster system!

What children or parenting book suggestions do YOU have?!

... Read moreWhen selecting books for future adopted children, it's crucial to choose titles that address their unique experiences and nurture their development. Some noteworthy mentions include 'I Love You Like No Otter,' which offers playful puns perfect for bedtime reading. This board book introduces children to love and affection in a light-hearted manner. For deeper engagement, 'Parenting Children of Trauma: The Foster-Adoption Guide' by Marcy Pusey provides essential insights into the psychological challenges faced by children in the foster system. This guide emphasizes the importance of understanding attachment disorders, offering supportive strategies to help parents navigate complex emotions. Additionally, books that reflect career aspirations, like those celebrating STEM fields, can encourage children to envision their futures without limitations. These inclusive narratives promote a broader understanding of identity and allow children to see themselves in various roles. Encouraging a love of poetry can be vital too. Collections that feature diverse voices and experiences help children appreciate art while also sparking conversations about their feelings and identities. In your quest for the right books, consider titles that resonate with your values as a parent. Whether focusing on emotional safety, creativity, or inclusivity, the right books can play a significant role in shaping the lives of future generations.
