Anime, Manga, and Novel of the Week (07/15-07/21)

Anime of the Week: Tomo-Chan Is A Girl!

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4.25ish)

I thought it was super cute. I read the manga a while back and just got around to watching. The characters are cute! Dub was awesome too. Would recommend!

Manga of the Week: Romantic Killer (Vol 1.)

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️ (3.8ish)

SJ App!

I liked the ridiculous premise of this story. It doesn’t take itself very seriously and I think that makes it enjoyable. Not sure if I’ll keep reading or just watch the anime but I found it fun.

Novel of the Week: Exit Strategy (Murderbot Diaries #4 ) by Martha Wells

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love Murderbot. It’s a great series if you’re looking for a short and fun read. Cozy sci-fi. To avoid spoilers that’s all I’ll say 🤭

... Read moreAlright, let's dive a little deeper into these awesome weekly entertainment picks! First up, 'Tomo-chan Is A Girl!' – I totally get why people are searching for its anime poster. That iconic image of Tomo-chan and Jun sitting back-to-back, as often depicted in promotional art, truly captures their unique, often hilarious dynamic, doesn't it? The anime does a fantastic job bringing the manga's charming and expressive art style to life. I especially loved how they animated Tomo’s exaggerated expressions and her endearing struggles with being seen as 'just one of the guys.' The character designs, from Tomo’s fiery red hair to Jun’s stoic demeanor, are consistently engaging and cute, making every scene a joy to watch. If you appreciate a well-done English dub, you're in for a treat here; the voice acting truly brings their vibrant personalities to life, making it super easy to binge! Moving on to 'Romantic Killer Vol 1' – I saw some of you are curious about the 'buff cat' (yes, Princess, the magical cat!). Oh my gosh, that feline is absolutely hilarious and such a pivotal part of the story's undeniable charm! The entire premise is wonderfully absurd: Princess, a magical entity, is trying to force our protagonist, Anzu, into a romantic relationship by systematically taking away all her favorite things – video games, chocolate, and even her actual cat! The visual gags involving Princess, especially when she’s being her most manipulative or comically showing off her 'buff' side, are pure gold. The manga's art style, even on the cover with Anzu surrounded by crazy objects, perfectly sets the tone for this over-the-top, laugh-out-loud comedy. It’s the kind of series that doesn't take itself too seriously, which is precisely why it’s so enjoyable and hard to put down. It's truly a fun, lighthearted escape! And for my fellow book lovers, 'Exit Strategy' from The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells is truly a gem. What makes it 'cozy sci-fi' for me is how deeply you connect with Murderbot's internal monologue. It’s a very relatable security unit that just wants to watch its downloaded media and be left alone, but it keeps reluctantly getting dragged into saving its human clients. Each novella, and 'Exit Strategy' is no exception, is a quick, engaging read that packs a punch with its action, dry humor, and surprisingly deep character development. If you're pondering what makes this series so addictive, it's the perfect blend of high stakes, intriguing alien worlds, and Murderbot's constantly evolving, often exasperated, desire for solitude and media consumption. It’s definitely a series that makes you feel comfortable and invested, even amidst dangerous space missions. Trust me, you'll be rooting for our favorite SecUnit from page one – it’s the perfect short and fun read, and a great 'exit strategy' from a reading slump!
