Lunch Date @ Taste of Hunan

With the kids in school, my husband and I took full advantage and ate somewhere we don’t normally go as a family due to food allergies and picky eating.

We started with a hot tea.

We ordered a fish with chili and pickled veggies soup, and a duck cooked with tea.

Not pictured was the chicken fried rice we ate with these dishes.

Everything was a 10/10. We have yet to order a bad dish from this restaurant. I don’t think it exists! Everything was delicious!

Unlike Sichuan food, which often has a numbing spice (mala), Hunan cuisine is known for its gan la (dry hot) and suan la (sour hot) flavors. It's a direct, fiery heat that really wakes up your palate, often balanced with rich, smoky, and even sour notes from pickled vegetables. This complexity is what keeps you coming back for more, even when your mouth is tingling! When we ordered the fish with chili and pickled veggies soup, it was a perfect example of that 'sour hot' characteristic. The broth was incredibly flavorful, and the tender fish soaked up all that amazing taste. If you're a fan of seafood and can handle some heat, this dish is an absolute must-try. The pickled vegetables add a fantastic tangy kick that cuts through the richness beautifully. It's a comforting yet exciting dish, especially if you're looking for something hearty for lunch. And the tea-cooked duck? Oh my goodness. This was a revelation. I've had duck in many forms, but the subtle aroma of tea infused into the crispy-skinned, succulent duck meat was just divine. It’s a sophisticated dish that showcases the culinary artistry of Hunan cuisine. It wasn't overly spicy, offering a wonderful contrast to some of the other fiery dishes we enjoyed. It makes for a great choice if you want something flavorful but perhaps a bit milder, or if you're dining with someone who prefers less heat. The presentation, as you might guess from the photos (like the one with the orchid!), is always beautiful too. For those new to Hunan food or even to 湘村人家, don't be afraid to ask your server for recommendations based on your spice preference. While Hunan food is known for its spice, many restaurants can adjust the heat level, or they have plenty of dishes that are less intense. A good strategy is to pick a mix: one super spicy dish, one medium, and one milder, perhaps with some fresh vegetables to balance everything out. And don't forget the rice! It's essential for soaking up all those delicious sauces and tempering the heat. We had chicken fried rice, which was a great choice, but plain white rice is also perfect. Another thing I always appreciate at 湘村人家 is their hot tea. It’s not just a beverage; it's part of the authentic dining experience. Starting with a warm cup of tea (like the one in the silver teapot we had) is so soothing and prepares your palate for the bold flavors ahead. It’s also incredibly refreshing between bites of spicy food. Dining at a place like 湘村人家 for lunch, especially without the kids, really lets you savor the experience. You can take your time, appreciate the nuances of each dish, and enjoy good conversation. It feels like a mini-getaway. So, if you're looking for an unforgettable lunch that offers a true taste of Hunan, I wholeheartedly recommend giving this place a visit. You'll leave feeling completely satisfied and already planning your next return trip!
