Migraine Awareness Month!
Migraine hit me like a ton of bricks today. Doing better but not quite 100.
Migraine Awareness Month is a pivotal time to raise awareness about migraines and their complexities. Migraines can manifest through various phases, each with its own unique symptoms. Understanding these phases is crucial for effective management. The first phase, known as the premonitory phase, can present with symptoms like food cravings, yawning, and increased fatigue. This phase can often alert individuals that a migraine might soon occur. The subsequent phase may involve an acute attack characterized by severe headaches, nausea, visual disturbances, and sensitivity to light and sound. Following the acute phase is the postdrome phase, often referred to as the “migraine hangover.” During this stage, individuals may feel lingering fatigue, confusion, or even an uplifted mood. Some may also experience additional signs such as neck pain or mood changes. It's important to note that not everyone experiences migraines in the same way; some may have aura symptoms such as visual disturbances before a headache, and others may face headaches without any warning signs. Effective management strategies include keeping a headache diary to track triggers, medication adherence during acute episodes, and lifestyle modifications such as stress management techniques and regular sleep patterns. This Migraine Awareness Month, let's prioritize understanding and managing migraines holistically, encouraging open discussion and support for those affected.
