Title: Regretting You

author: Colleen Hoover

Genre: Romance & drama

Number of pages: 354

My rating: 7.8/10

Start date: October 2nd, 2025

Finish date: November 30th, 2025

Spice level: 🌶️ 1/5

Book notes: i recommend this book for readers 16 and up.

This book has mentions of death, grief/navigating grief, some language, as well as sexual activity.

My review: this book was hard for me to get through. I Love the story however I think it was just hard for me to get through because the movie was about to come out in theaters right as I was starting it and parts of the book got spoiled for me which made me lose interest in reading it. I love all the characters! I had a better visualization of what the characters looked like since I had already seen the trailer for the movie. I didn’t like that Clara didn’t learn about her father and aunt until the very end of the book. I knew she would eventually find out the truth about them two but I kinda grew restless and lost some interest. To me that alone as well as Morgan and Clara’s relationship with one another was slow burn to me. I understood and could sort of relate to Clara in similar ways when I was a teenager; the circumstances were definitely different but our mindsets were sort of the same. I didn’t understand the whole thing with the tool box full of letters. I heard somewhere that aunt Jenny wrote the letters for Clara which is why Chris had a lock on the toolbox but after watching the movie and reading the book my conclusion for that is it was just a theory and it’s false info. I really did not like that Morgan completely demolished all the letters in the toolbox. Yes, grief and peace played into the fact that she got rid of the letters however I read the entire book thinking I would get to see what the letters were about and it was kind of disappointing. Harsh opinion but I also think the ending was sort of rushed (or I could just be overthinking it).

i watched the movie after I finished the book and I adored the movie. The cast was perfect and they all portrayed each of their characters perfectly!

... Read moreOkay, so let's dive even deeper into 'Regretting You' because there's so much to unpack beyond just the plot summary! When I first picked up the paperback, I was immediately drawn to the cover – it has this simple yet profound feel that perfectly hints at the emotional journey inside. The story truly centers on the raw, often messy, dynamics of mother-daughter relationships and how past secrets can echo through generations. One of the main themes I kept circling back to was the idea of grief and healing. It’s not just about the initial shock of loss, but the long, winding road of navigating life afterward, especially when you're carrying a burden of unspoken truths. Morgan’s struggle with her past and Clara’s journey of self-discovery, especially as a teenager trying to understand her parents' complicated history, really resonated with me. I found myself relating to Clara's mindset, even if our circumstances were vastly different; that feeling of trying to find your own identity while learning to love yourself, as that beautiful postcard graphic in the book suggests, is so universal. The tension between Morgan and Clara felt incredibly real, a slow burn of emotions and misunderstandings that slowly unravel. Let's talk about the characters for a moment. Beyond Morgan and Clara, the role of Miller (Clara’s father) is absolutely central to the entire narrative. His actions, even in absence, shape so much of what happens. Understanding his choices and the impact they had on everyone, particularly Morgan and Jenny, is key to grasping the full weight of the story. And then there's Jonah, whose presence, though less central, really highlights the themes of attraction and commitment within such a complex family dynamic. The book's spice level at 1/5 means it’s definitely not the focus, which I appreciated for this particular story. The intimacy is more emotional and implied, focusing on the deep bonds and fractures between characters rather than explicit scenes. It allows the heavy themes to truly shine. And oh, the movie! After finishing the book, watching the adaptation was such an experience. While I had my initial hesitations about the book because I'd seen the trailer and felt some parts were spoiled, the movie actually enhanced my understanding in some ways. The casting truly was spot on; seeing the actors bring Morgan, Clara, and Miller to life gave me even better visualizations of them. It felt like they perfectly captured the essence of the characters and the emotional weight of the story. It’s rare for an adaptation to feel so right, but I genuinely adored this one. That mysterious toolbox full of letters, though? I was as disappointed as the original reviewer when Morgan decided to destroy them. I spent the whole book hoping for that big reveal, for those letters to unlock some profound understanding. While I get that it symbolized Morgan finding peace and moving on, part of me still wishes we could have seen what Jenny wrote for Clara. It left a lingering question mark in my mind, making me wonder if perhaps some truths are meant to stay buried, or if the act of destroying them was a statement in itself about processing grief in unique ways. It's a choice that certainly sparks discussion among readers! Overall, 'Regretting You' is a powerful exploration of love, loss, secrets, and the unbreakable, yet sometimes complicated, bonds of family. It’s definitely a read that stays with you long after you’ve turned the final page.
