Must-Know Nursing Info! 📖💉

Hey everyone! Here’s a PDF I found that covers key information on crutches, canes, and walkers. It also goes over prioritization & delegation, the nursing process, wound care, chest tubes, pain management, and sterilization. Super helpful for nursing students—hope it helps! Let me know if you find it useful!

... Read moreHey future nurses! Navigating nursing school and clinicals can feel like drinking from a firehose, right? I remember constantly searching for clear, practical guides to truly understand everything. That's why I wanted to share some expanded thoughts on those crucial topics I've learned are game-changers, especially when you're preparing for your NCLEX or stepping onto the unit. Let's talk about mobility aids first – crutches, canes, and walkers. I used to get so confused about which leg goes first! A key tip I learned for gait patterns with crutches is to remember 'Good leg goes to heaven, bad leg goes to hell.' This means when going up stairs, your strong leg leads, then the crutches and weak leg follow. For going down, it's the opposite: crutches and weak leg first, then your strong leg. When using a cane, always hold it on your unaffected (stronger) side. This provides better support for your weaker leg. Proper fitting is also vital; ensure the top of the cane/crutch is level with your hip, and your elbow is slightly bent. Mastering these stair navigation techniques truly builds your confidence. Then there's the nursing process – Assessment, Diagnosis, Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation. It might seem like just another acronym, but honestly, it’s the backbone of all patient care. I remember struggling to link my clinical assessment findings to actual nursing diagnoses. My advice? Spend time truly understanding each step. Assessment isn't just collecting data; it's about critical thinking. What does this information mean for your patient? For nursing student patient assessment, always start with your ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) and then layer on Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs to prioritize. This helps you identify the most urgent patient problems first, guiding your nursing interventions. Speaking of nursing interventions, they're your actions to help the patient! I often wondered about the difference between independent and collaborative interventions. Independent nursing interventions are actions you can initiate on your own, based on your nursing judgment (like repositioning a patient to prevent pressure ulcers). Collaborative problems nursing involves working with the healthcare team, like administering medications prescribed by a doctor or consulting with physical therapy. Don't forget the Five Rights of Delegation if you're ever delegating tasks. Learning to cluster care – grouping activities like vital signs, medication administration, and hygiene – can save you so much time and improve patient comfort, especially when you have a long nursing to-do list! Beyond these, remember the practicalities. For wound care, I once assisted with a wet-to-dry wound dressing change, and seeing the meticulous technique for assessment and procedure really highlighted the importance of preventing infection. You'll also encounter chest tubes; understanding their basic mechanics and what to assess for (like bubbling in the water seal chamber) is crucial. And when it comes to sterile technique, practicing donning gloves correctly until it's second nature will pay off during countless procedures. These are just a few areas where a solid understanding can make a huge difference in your journey. Keep practicing, keep asking questions, and don't be afraid to make mistakes – that's how we learn and grow into amazing nurses!
