Why do some kids hug strangers but push away their own parents?

Indiscriminate affection is one of the most confusing symptoms of Reactive Attachment Disorder.

A child may hug strangers, climb into the lap of someone they just met, or show deep affection to people outside the family-even while rejecting or ignoring their own mom or dad.

Why?

Because trust is upside down. When your early life taught you, "I can't rely on the people closest to me,' you look for safety anywhere else-even with people you don't know.

But here's the thing: giving away your heart to anyone who smiles at you doesn't heal the would. It just hides it.

There's One who won't misuse your trust, One who gives perfect love without fear: Jesus.

📖 Jeremiah 17:5 & 7

"Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength...

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord."

Child shows affection to strangers but resists parents/caregivers.

We often put our trust in people who cannot give us true safety. (Jeremiah 17:5)

This behavior often comes from early neglect or inconsistent caregiving.

It reflects a heart looking for love apart from God's design for family and safe authority.

Feels safer giving shallow affection to strangers because there's no real risk of rejection.

Only Christ offers perfect, trustworthy love-free from betrayal and abandonment. (Psalm 36:7)

Parents feel rejected, strangers feel flattered, but the child remains disconnected inside.

Disordered trust is a sin problem (placing trust in man), but Jesus calls us to trust Him fully.

1. God (Who He Is):

"God made you feel safe, lasting love. He is faithful. He never lies, never leaves, never abuses. He designed family, not chaos. He is love itself."

_________

2. Man (Our Problem):

"But we don't trust Him. We try to keep ourselves safe by trusting anyone but Him. For you, that looks like giving affection to people who haven't earned it, while rejecting those who are safe but feel scary to trust. That's sin-not just brokenness-because it says to God, 'I'll choose my own way."

_________

3. Christ (The Solution):

"Jesus came into this world to love perfectly. He never once rejected someone who came to Him. And when we rejected Him, He still died for us. He took your fear, your mistrust, your broken love-and nailed it to the cross. he rose again so that you could know real, safe love."

_________

4. Response (Your Part):

"You don't have to keep giving your heart to people who can't hold it. Give it to Jesus. Tell Him you've trusted the wrong things. Believe He is who He says He is: safe, strong, and faithful. He will forgive you. He will give you a new heart that know how to love-and to be loved-right."

... Read moreIndiscriminate affection is a complex and often misunderstood symptom that can deeply affect children suffering from Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). This behavior, where a child shows excessive affection to strangers yet resists closeness with their primary caregivers, stems from early experiences of neglect or inconsistent caregiving. These early experiences disrupt the natural development of trust and safety within family relationships, leading the child to seek connection and security wherever it seems most accessible—even with unfamiliar people. At its core, indiscriminate affection reflects the child's effort to cope with overwhelming feelings of abandonment and insecurity. By offering shallow or superficial affection to strangers, the child avoids the more painful risk of trusting those who are theoretically safest but who have previously hurt or failed them. This behavior can be heartbreaking for parents and caregivers who feel rejected, while outsiders may mistakenly feel flattered by the sudden openness. Addressing indiscriminate affection requires understanding that the issue is not simply behavioral but deeply relational and emotional. Trust, when formed in chaotic or unsafe environments, becomes confused and inverted. It is crucial for caregivers and support systems to provide consistent, reliable, and patient responses to help rebuild a child's capacity for secure attachment. Integrating spiritual perspectives, many find comfort in the message that ultimate safety and love come from Jesus Christ, who embodies perfect, unwavering love free from betrayal. Encouraging children and families to place their trust in this divine love can support healing beyond human limitations. As the biblical references Jeremiah 17:5-7 and Psalm 36:7 suggest, true safety and trust are found in God, who never leaves or abuses. Therapeutic strategies often combine this faith-based support with clinical interventions such as attachment-focused therapy, trauma-informed care, and parenting programs aimed at creating predictability and emotional attunement. Caregivers learn to recognize the child’s underlying fear and mistrust rather than react solely to challenging behaviors. Healing indiscriminate affection takes time and a multifaceted approach that validates the child’s pain, provides corrective relational experiences, and encourages placing trust in both nurturing people and spiritual truths. Families experiencing these challenges are encouraged to seek professional guidance and community support to nurture true connection and repair broken trust.
