I Finally Beat the Azelaic Acid Sting!

I’m 3 weeks (starting week 4) into using azelaic acid, and the stinging was driving me crazy 😩… until I discovered this game-changer! Here’s what I do:

1️⃣ Apply a lightweight moisturizer first (Avène Tolerance Control Cream)

2️⃣ Apply my azelaic acid on top

3️⃣ Finish with Avène Tolerance Control Balm to lock everything in

My skin feels soothed, calm, and I can actually stick to my routine now 🙌💆‍♀️. If AA has been too irritating for you, try buffering it like this!

2025/9/22 Edited to

... Read moreAzelaic acid is widely praised for its effectiveness in treating acne, rosacea, and pigmentation issues, but its stinging sensation can be a major barrier for many users, especially those with sensitive skin. A great way to alleviate this discomfort is through a technique called "buffering," which involves applying a moisturizer before and after the active ingredient. This creates a protective barrier that helps reduce irritation without compromising the benefits of azelaic acid. The Avène Tolerance Control Cream and Soothing Skin Recovery Balm highlighted here are ideal for this buffering approach because they are formulated specifically for reactive and sensitive skin types. The cream helps to hydrate and calm the skin prior to azelaic acid application, minimizing the initial sting. Afterward, the balm locks in moisture and further soothes the skin, preventing any lingering redness or dryness. For those new to azelaic acid, it’s recommended to start slow—using the product every other night or mixing it with a moisturizer at first—to build up tolerance. Additionally, choosing lightweight, fragrance-free, and non-comedogenic products like Avène reduces the chance of adverse reactions. Consistency is key; after a few weeks, most users notice their skin adapts, and the stinging sensation diminishes. Remember to always apply sunscreen daily, as azelaic acid can increase photosensitivity. With this simple yet effective buffered routine, you can enjoy the powerful benefits of azelaic acid without sacrificing comfort or skin barrier health.
