Crochet Bag - Update
Just an update!
I have to finish the straps next. I started this over the weekend so I can say it took me about 3/4 days!
I only started crocheting about 2/3 months ago and yallll, I’m sooo proud of me
It's truly amazing what you can create with just a crochet hook and some yarn! When I first started crocheting just a couple of months ago, I never imagined I'd be making a beautiful granny square shoulder bag like this so quickly. For anyone out there thinking of picking up a hook, I say go for it! It's such a rewarding hobby. This project began as a challenge to myself, and I wanted something that felt 'modern crochet' – not just the traditional, delicate doilies, but something functional and stylish. Granny squares are classic, but by choosing a vibrant burnt orange paired with a calming light green, I feel like I gave it a fresh, contemporary twist. The visual details of the granny squares coming together to form the main body of the bag are exactly what I envisioned. If you're a beginner like me, here are a few things I've learned that might help you on your journey to creating your own modern crochet pieces: Start Simple: Don't jump into complex patterns. My bag uses basic granny squares, which are fantastic for learning tension and stitch consistency. There are tons of free patterns online for simple squares. Choose Your Yarn Wisely: The type of yarn makes a huge difference. For this shoulder bag, I wanted something durable but soft. My burnt orange yarn and light green yarn are both acrylic, which is forgiving for beginners and comes in a huge array of colors. Invest in Good Hooks: A comfortable crochet hook can prevent hand fatigue. I started with a basic set, and finding the right size for your yarn is crucial for getting the right drape and look for your bag. Embrace Imperfection: Your first projects won't be perfect, and that's totally okay! Mine certainly aren't. Every stitch is a learning opportunity. I had to frog (unravel) a few times, especially when joining the squares to get that perfect circular shape for the bag base, but it was worth it. Find Inspiration: Looking at what others create, like on Lemon8, Instagram, or Pinterest, can give you so many ideas for 'modern crochet bible' worthy projects. That's how I got the idea for the color combination and turning granny squares into a functional bag. Patience is Key: Crocheting takes time, but seeing your project come to life, stitch by stitch, is incredibly satisfying. I spent about 3-4 days on the main body of this bag, working on it whenever I had a spare moment, and now only the straps are left! I'm so incredibly proud of how far I've come in just a few months. This granny square shoulder bag isn't just an accessory; it's a testament to what a little dedication and a lot of yarn can achieve. I hope this inspires you to grab a hook and start your own modern crochet adventure!
