These components work in a closed loop: plants produce oxygen and food, tiny creatures consume them, and decomposers break down waste, recycling nutrients. Activated Carbon (Optional): A thin layer can help filter water and prevent odors. Substrate Layer: Add 1-2 inches of nutrient-rich soil or aquarium substrate.
