Help Needed! WEIGHT LIFTING BEGINNER

I need workout splits and exercise ideas for beginner weight lifters!

My first fall semester and this current spring semester I have been trying focus on fitness. I am beginning to explore weightlifting (with dumbbells) but am looking for advice and ideas. My goal is to gain muscle and strength. I currently lift 3x a week with yoga and pilates classes on the other 2 days.

I think fitness and wellness are SO SO important for our physical and mental health. So I want to encourage y'all to join me on my journey and update me on yours!

So help a girl out?? All ideas welcome as long as they are kind and respectful.

Since you’re lifting with dumbbells three times a week and complementing that with yoga and pilates on other days, you’re on a great path to balance strength, flexibility, and recovery. A simple yet effective approach for beginners is to follow a full-body workout split every session. This means targeting all major muscle groups each workout, typically three times a week. For example, including goblet squats, dumbbell deadlifts, chest presses, bent-over rows, overhead presses, and planks can cover lower body, push, pull, and core. This kind of split helps beginners build foundational strength and muscle evenly. As you progress, you could transition into an upper/lower split, alternating between focusing on upper body muscles like biceps, triceps, shoulders, and chest during one workout, and lower body muscles like quads, hamstrings, and glutes on another. This allows greater volume and intensity per muscle group while still lifting three to four times weekly. Incorporating mindfulness from yoga and pilates can enhance your lifting journey by improving mobility, reducing injury risk, and supporting mental focus and wellness—key as you’ve noted fitness impacts both physical and mental health deeply. Personally, I found tracking progress through a workout journal incredibly motivating and helpful to adjust reps, sets, or weights while preventing plateaus. For beginners, prioritizing proper form over heavy weights is essential; consulting reliable video tutorials or seeking occasional coaching feedback can reinforce this. Remember to listen to your body, rest adequately, stay hydrated, and fuel with nutrient-rich foods to support muscle repair and growth. Sharing your fitness journey creates community support, and you might find others eager to swap tips and cheer you on. Keep exploring and enjoy each milestone on your path to strength and wellness!
