What do y'all think?
Thrifting is a rewarding hobby, but it often comes with tough decisions about what to keep and what to let go. I've personally faced situations similar to leaving a damaged item behind at the GW bins, especially when it involves beautiful, sometimes pricey brands like Mackenzie-Childs. While damaged items can sometimes be fixed or repurposed, it's important to assess whether restoration efforts will be worth the time, cost, and eventual value. When you find a damaged thrift item, consider the extent of the damage: Is it something minor like a small chip, a scratch, or a loose handle that you can easily repair? Or is the damage structural, compromising the integrity or safety of the piece? If the latter, it might be best to leave it behind—as the author did—but it’s always a gamble whether you’ll later regret it. Another factor is personal attachment vs. investment. If you love the style and see potential for creative DIY fixes, keeping the item could be rewarding. Alternatively, some people prefer to stick to nearly perfect items to resell or decorate flawlessly. Finally, consider the sustainability and thrifting philosophy: Sometimes letting go of a damaged piece means it can be reused in a different way by someone else or be recycled, contributing positively to circular fashion and reduce waste. Overall, trust your instincts but don’t be too hard on yourself. Thrift regrets happen to all of us, and each experience helps refine what we look for on future thrifting trips.
