That feeling of seeing the snow pile up outside, knowing you have to head into the HOSPITAL, is just something else. Snow-covered, icy roads turn a seemingly short drive into an hour-long white-knuckle journey. You see fewer cars, but the ones you do see are struggling, sliding, or getting stuck. It’s a constant battle with anxiety, wondering if you’ll make it safely. Sometimes, like today, it means making the tough decision to bunk down near the hospital, just to guarantee you're there for your shift. It feels strange, being so close yet so far from home, but it's part of PREPARING FOR a winter storm when patient care depends on you. Once you're actually at the hospital, the work intensifies. Staffing can be a nightmare; colleagues get stuck at home, so those of us who make it often pull double shifts or work extra hours. The emergency room sees an influx of weather-related injuries – slips, falls, car accidents – adding to our usual patient load. It’s a true test of endurance, both mentally and physically. We're all working together, leaning on each other, because it's truly 'WHAT YOU GOTTA DO' to keep things running smoothly and safely for everyone. Missing my warm bed is just the tip of the iceberg. There's the constant worry for family at home, especially if they’re dealing with power outages or dangerous conditions. There's the underlying chill that seems to creep into the building, no matter how many layers you wear, and the sheer exhaustion that sets in after hours of intense work. You push through on adrenaline, fueled by coffee and the unwavering knowledge that patients depend on you for their well-being. The camaraderie among us 'ESSENTIAL WORKERS' is incredible though; we share stories, frustrations, and tiny moments of humor that help us keep going. For anyone out there wondering what goes into being a healthcare worker in these conditions, it's about preparation, resilience, and a deep sense of responsibility. We pack extra clothes, snacks, sometimes even a pillow and blanket. We check our cars religiously and fill up on gas before the storm hits. But most of all, we mentally prepare to 'BRING IT' – to show up, be present, and provide the best care possible, no matter how wild the weather gets. It's a demanding reality, but knowing we're making a difference, even when I'd rather be home, makes it all worthwhile.
