Gestational Diabetes

The reality of gestational diabetes is… it sucks. A lot.

I am angry. It feels unfair. I failed by ONE point. I have to prick my finger 4x a day. Luckily I do not need medication or Insulin. I feel like nobody talks about GDM, so I will. It makes your whole pregnancy feel more scary and unfair. My OB made me feel bad about it, I’ve actually been losing weight. I have lost 5 pounds and my OB celebrates it. I have gained 25lbs in 36 weeks. And I feel bad about it. Hearing what other moms-to-be have gained, it feels normal or less than what a lot of women gain. I feel ashamed. And it’s not even my fault. But nobody says it’s not your fault. They tell you diet and exercise. I am a waitress 5 days a week, 7 hour shifts with one 15 minute break. I am active! I do low carbs, but they tell you that you need carbs! But the carbs spike your numbers! My blood sugar numbers are perfect and don’t even line up with diabetes. My OB thinks my test “may have been a fluke”, but doesn’t want to do anything about it. They have threatened me with insulin if my fasting numbers don’t get better. They were 96/97/98 max and they want me under 95. I personally refuse insulin because it will drop my numbers to low. Considering I am right at the mark for safe fasting numbers. I have gotten it below 95 by not eating or drinking anything a few hours before bed and nothing when I wake up. Your sugar is naturally higher when you first wake up, but that’s when they want you to take it. And IYKYK you want bed time snacks when you’re pregnant. It feels like you are shamed by the doctors and don’t really get comfort or any peace of mind. I have had to figure this out alone. I don’t know anyone in my personal life that also had GDM. it’s a very lonely thing. If you have it or are worried you might, you failed your one hour test and are worried about the 3 hour test, no matter what, it’ll be okay. Advocate for yourself and make sure you educate yourself. If you have doctors like mine, it’s up to you to sort it out anyways. I’ve learned a lot over the last few weeks. I had zero symptoms. I have excess fluid and she’s measuring a little larger. That’s it! If you have made it this far, and are a gestational diabetic, need to vent or complain or get your frustration about it out, my comments are a safe space to do so. I am sad, angry and frustrated too. I don’t feel like my providers are providing the right way for me. I am losing trust in them. I still take care of myself the way they want me to, but something has not felt right with either of them.

... Read moreGestational diabetes (GDM) is a condition that often goes unrecognized and can lead to feelings of isolation and frustration among expectant mothers. Many women find themselves navigating a maze of conflicting medical advice while feeling a lack of support from their healthcare providers. It's important to understand that GDM isn’t a reflection of personal failure, but rather a condition that occurs due to the body’s inability to produce enough insulin during pregnancy. As you advocate for yourself, consider engaging with online communities where shared experiences can provide solace and guidance. Research indicates that risk factors for GDM include obesity, family history of diabetes, and previous instances of GDM. If you fall into these categories, early screening and monitoring are essential. Moreover, adjustments in diet, such as opting for low glycemic index foods, can help manage blood sugar levels effectively. Keeping a close eye on your blood sugar and finding ways to stay active—like walking or swimming—can significantly impact your overall health during pregnancy. It's crucial to remember that while managing GDM can be challenging, many women go on to have healthy pregnancies and babies. Seek out nutritional counseling or support groups specializing in GDM for tailored advice and emotional support. Surround yourself with those who understand your struggles and can offer encouragement on difficult days. Whether you need to vent frustrations or seek tips on managing your diet and exercise, there's a community ready to support you on your journey.
