Let’s talk C-section

I had gestational diabetes and had polyhydramnios. (Excess fluid) I asked my OB for a c-section because of all the risks I was not willing to take if I gave birth vaginally. After an ultrasound to check my fluid I was told not to labor. If my water broke, get to the hospital ASAP and don’t waste any time, my OB was worried about a prolapsed cord and she told me it could kill my baby. Luckily we made it to our scheduled day. I was having contractions all day, so I knew she’d come soon anyways. I was 39 weeks exactly when I delivered. I went to get bloodwork done 2 days before my scheduled date, the hospital gave me special soap to use the clean the whole lower abdomen area. They will have you shower with it the night before and morning of your cesarean. I showed up 2 hours before my time, they did some more bloodwork, monitored baby’s heart and my contractions. They stated an IV, and let me just chill out in triage before it was time to go back. I had to leave my husband for prep, they did a spinal block, which wasn’t as bad as people say. Don’t let them scare you. It was a pinch. The IV was worse. I had a great nurse holding me in a hug. I was crying because I was kinda scared. They were all great and comforting about it. They helped me lay flat on my back and checked to see if I was numb. They started catheter and scrubbed my lower abdomen and private areas and my Husband came back and we waited a moment for my OB and she got started. I’d say about 5 whole minutes went by before I heard my baby crying! They pulled the curtain down so I could see and touch her. It was amazing to finally see her!! They then took her over to weigh and check on her, I saw two little dimples pop up! At that time I did make the mistake of looking up at the light they had on my belly, its reflective. What is saw looked like a pothole with a puddle in it. 0/10 recommend looking at your cesarean happening. When they were done getting my girl all taken care of, my husband brought her over to me, and we just stared at her as they finished closing me up. I felt nothing in the whole procedure besides the pressure of them pushing my ribs down to push baby out. It was painless, and start to finish took about 46 minutes. They took me to my room to recover and I stated to get very sick. I went through 5 vomit bags. 😵‍💫 that was when some pain set in. My incision was very very fresh but I still felt every bit of throwing up. They gave me 3 different nausea meds, none worked. Then put a patch behind my ear, which had me in and out of consciousness. My whole family and in laws came and I don’t remember it. I was so drowsy and weak and nodding off, so I wasn’t even allowed to hold my baby. I still wouldn’t change anything. I struggled hard, but me and my baby were safe and healthy. That evening, they took my catheter out, helped me get up and walk to go pee and gave me medicines for pain. The nurses came in a lot so sleep was lacking my whole hospital stay. After the spinal fully wore off,

I was in an extreme amount of pain. We got to go home 3 days later. It mostly feels like a blur. I’m still having a hard time with recovery 5 days later. It hurts me to go from standing to sitting, sitting to standing, showering, car rides. I was given oxycodone for pain, I don’t take it as much as I’m directed to, but definitely recommend you stay ahead of the pain. As crazy as it felt, I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I never knew I could love someone so much.

... Read moreCesarean sections, commonly known as C-sections, are surgical procedures used to deliver babies when vaginal delivery poses risks to the mother or baby. It's essential to recognize that while C-sections can be lifesaving, they also involve recovery challenges and potential complications. Preparing for a C-section includes discussing pain management options and understanding the hospital procedures that ensure both mother and baby's safety. It’s crucial for expectant mothers to address their concerns with healthcare providers about delivery methods, especially if they face conditions like gestational diabetes or polyhydramnios. The experience varies significantly per individual, yet knowing what to expect can help alleviate anxiety. Women often share their stories about pain management post-surgery, and many recommend proactive pain relief measures, such as staying ahead of dosages for medications like oxycodone, to enhance recovery. In recent years, the focus has shifted toward promoting vaginal birth when possible, emphasizing the importance of informed choices in maternity care. Conversations surrounding C-section awareness have grown, encouraging mothers to openly share their experiences and support one another in their unique journeys. Many find solace in communities that prioritize maternal health and wellness, where insights into recovery practices and emotional support thrive. Overall, whether contemplating a C-section or recovering from one, connecting with others can provide invaluable resources and comfort in this transformative time. Remember that each birth story is unique, and embracing your path is key to a positive motherhood experience.

I’m 2 months pp. Oh my gosh, I was super nauseous and throwing up during my C-section as well and nothing they did helped. I hated fighting that feeling of losing consciousness over and over again. I’m so happy that you and baby are on your way to recovery and your baby is here! Congratulations!
