Boredom is a skill every child needs

Like any mom, I’m always trying to provide fun activities for my child. However I’ve recently realized the power of BEING BORED. I don’t do this all the time, but I occasionally try to find a time where I DON’T have a designated activity for my kiddo. The first time I did this, she frowned and grumbled quite a bit… but after a while… guess what???

She figured out a fun game to play all by herself! My five year old used so many skills by doing this, including problem solving, self regulation, and imagination!

Obviously some kids will take some time to figure this particular skill out, but be patient with them, and once in a while remember to LET THEM BE BORED!

... Read moreIn today's fast-paced world, it is tempting for parents to fill every moment with scheduled activities. However, research highlights the importance of boredom as a catalyst for creativity and independence in children. When children are allowed to be bored, they learn to entertain themselves, develop their problem-solving skills, and tap into their imagination. This process can initially feel frustrating for both parents and children, but with patience and encouragement, children will find unique ways to play and explore. It is essential to strike a balance between guided activities and unstructured free time. Additionally, engaging in unstructured playtime promotes emotional resilience and self-regulation. Children can learn to cope with moments of inactivity, thus fostering patience and mindfulness. To enhance this learning experience, parents could create safe, inviting spaces at home where kids can indulge in creative expressions, be it through art, building, or storytelling. This approach not only nurtures their skills but also strengthens the parent-child bond through shared exploration and discovery. Letting your child be bored is indeed one of the greatest lessons they will learn, equipping them with vital life skills for the future.
