Miyajima
The enshrined deities are Susa no Omikoto, a brave deity who defeated Yamagata Orochi, and Kotoshiro Nushi no Kami, a child of Okuninushi no Kami, an enshrined deity of Izumo Taisha Shrine, who later became the guardian deity of the Imperial Family. Both are gods of Japanese mythology.
The date of its foundation is unknown, but it is said that the main hall was built in the middle of the Muromachi period.
In the past, there was Kongoin, a sub-temple of Daiganji Temple on the island, and it was enshrined as its guardian.
It was rebuilt by Mori Terumoto in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, and its appearance still remains today.
Kongoin Temple was dismantled by the separation of Buddhism and Shintoism in the Meiji era, and only the main shrine of Arakoshi Shrine which was built behind it was left.
The main hall with cypress bark roof and vermilion lacquer is designated as an important cultural property of the country.

宮島は厳島神社の舞台として有名ですが、その御祭神である素盞鳴尊（すさのおのみこと）は日本神話の中で八岐大蛇を退治した勇猛な神として知られています。私も初めて宮島を訪れた際、これらの神話の背景を知ることで神社巡りがより深く感じられました。 一方、事代主神（ことしろぬしのかみ）は、出雲大社のご祭神である大国主神の子であり、後に皇室の守護神ともなる神様です。厳島神社ではこの二柱の神様が祀られ、その歴史は室町時代中期の本殿建築にまでさかのぼります。私も現地で見 た朱漆塗りの御本殿の美しさに圧倒されました。 さらに、宮島の歴史的背景として、安土桃山時代に毛利輝元によって再建されたことや、明治時代の神仏分離政策により金剛院の解体と荒胡子神社本殿の保存なども忘れてはなりません。これらの歴史的な変遷を知ることで、単なる観光地としてだけでなく、豊かな文化遺産としての宮島をより深く味わえます。 私の体験から言うと、フェリーで宮島に渡り、厳島神社を訪れた後、神社の横にある末社や周辺の自然もじっくり散策すると、神々の息吹を身近に感じることができるでしょう。これから宮島を訪れる方には、神様の神話や歴史背景を少し調べてから訪れることをおすすめします。より特別な旅になると思います。
