Icarus <3

Creating an original character like my Icarus OC is such a rewarding journey, and I wanted to share a bit about my process, especially since many of you are curious about drawing anime characters and creating compelling illustrations! For me, it all starts with the 'persona' – who is this character? What are their defining traits? Icarus, for example, has a certain mystique, which I tried to convey through his face and especially his blue eyes. I often find inspiration from mythology, and the name "Icarus" itself carries a dramatic weight that I wanted to infuse into his design. When I start a digital anime art drawing, I usually begin with a rough sketch to get the pose and general expression right. For Icarus, I really wanted to emphasize his unique features, like his curly purple hair and those subtle freckles. Hair can be tricky in anime style; I find that focusing on volume and flow, rather than individual strands, helps give it that dynamic feel. For the purple color, I experimented with a few shades until I found one that felt vibrant but also a little mysterious, matching his vibe. I use various digital art tools for my digital art, which allows for a lot of flexibility with brushes and layers. One of the most impactful elements in this piece, and something I always try to improve, is the lighting. You can see I used a strong golden light source from below, which created those dramatic shadows across his features. This technique is fantastic for expressing atmospheric & compelling character illustrations. It really sculpts the face and adds depth, making the character feel more alive and dimensional. If you're wondering how to draw Icarus or any character with strong lighting, try thinking about where your light source is coming from and how it would realistically interact with the forms of the face. Don't be afraid to push the contrast! It’s all about creating that 'mood.' Focusing on the icarus face specifically, I made sure his blue eyes were a focal point. Eyes are the windows to the soul, right? I layered different shades of blue and added subtle highlights to make them sparkle and convey emotion. Even small details, like the shape of the eyebrows or the slight tilt of the head, contribute significantly to the character's overall expression. For the skin, I kept it relatively smooth but added a hint of texture around the freckles to make him feel more real and approachable. I’ve also found that sharing my art on platforms like Tumblr helps a lot with getting feedback and seeing what resonates with others. It's a great community for artists, and seeing other artists' interpretations of "icarus persona" or just general character design is incredibly inspiring. When you're trying to develop your own Icarus character or any anime persona, don't be afraid to experiment with different styles and techniques. My goal is always to create an anime character that feels unique and tells a story, even in a single image.
