From Death to Life

Romans 6:5 (NIV):

“For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.”

This verse is part of Paul’s explanation of what it means to belong to Christ.

Breaking it down

“United with him in a death like his…”

• Paul is not saying Christians die physically the same way Jesus did.

• He means that through faith in Christ, believers are spiritually united with Jesus.

• This is symbolized in baptism: going under the water represents dying to the old life of sin.

”…we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.”

• Just as Jesus was raised from the dead, believers share in His resurrection.

• This has two meanings:

1. Present reality: We receive a new spiritual life now, with the power to live differently (Romans 6:4).

2. Future hope: One day, our bodies will also be resurrected and glorified when Christ returns (1 Corinthians 15).

The main message

Paul is teaching that believers are so closely connected to Jesus that:

• His death becomes the death of our old sinful self.

• His resurrection becomes the source of our new life.

• Therefore, Christians are no longer slaves to sin but are called to live for God.

A simple illustration

Imagine a branch grafted into a healthy tree. Once connected, the branch shares the life of the tree. In the same way, when we are united with Christ, we share in His death (our old life is put to death) and His resurrection (we receive new life and the promise of eternal life).

In summary: Romans 6:5 teaches that everyone who is united with Christ by faith shares in both His death and His resurrection. Because Jesus died and rose again, believers can live a transformed life now and have the assurance of resurrection and eternal life in the future.

Romans 6:5 reminds us that when we are united with Christ, the old life doesn’t have the final word. We die to our old ways and rise with Him into a new life filled with hope, purpose, and the promise of resurrection. ✝️🙏

... Read moreReflecting on Romans 6:5, I’ve found it incredibly empowering to understand how faith in Christ offers a complete spiritual transformation. When the verse says we are united with Him in a death like His, it doesn’t refer to physical death but to a spiritual reality that changes us from within. This concept became clearer to me through baptism, which symbolically shows us dying to our old sinful habits and emerging into a new life. In daily life, this means that struggles with past mistakes or feelings of shame don’t have to define who we are anymore. I’ve personally experienced renewed purpose and grace by embracing the idea that my old self was 'buried' with Christ, much like the image of a branch grafted into a healthy tree sharing its life. This spiritual union brings hope because it confirms that even now, I can walk in 'newness of life' as described in Romans 6:4. Moreover, the future hope of resurrection is a comforting promise that encourages me during difficult times. Knowing that just as Jesus rose again, we too have the assurance of a glorified body and eternal life provides a perspective that helps me endure hardships with faith and optimism. This verse not only deepens our understanding of Christian faith but also challenges us to live differently—no longer as slaves to sin but as people empowered to serve God and others. The transformation from death to life is both a present spiritual reality and a future hope, making Romans 6:5 a cornerstone verse that has personally shaped my journey in faith and daily walk with Christ.
