Story Time ☕️ How I Met My Best Friend 20 Years Ago
My best friend and I have known each other for almost 20 years.
We were neighbours living in different blocks, and we met when I was 5 years old and she was 6. Like most kids, we became friends at the playground in our neighbourhood.
If you know me, you’ll know that I’m a very easy-going person. I rarely reject people. If you want to go somewhere or try something, just let me know and I’ll usually accommodate. Even if it’s not something I really feel like doing, I’ll still join you because that’s what friends do.
My best friend, however, is the complete opposite 😂
She’s the type who will say no if she doesn’t feel like it, and honestly, I don’t mind at all. That’s just who she is.
As for me? I’m the “sibei steady” type. As long as it’s not illegal, I’m probably down for it 🤭😂
Now, let me tell you why I’m ranting…
Reflecting on a friendship that has lasted two decades truly highlights how initial childhood bonds can evolve into lifelong connections. I remember my own experience of forming a best friendship that began in the playground, just like in this story. Those early years are filled with innocent joy, shared adventures, and even disagreements that help shape mutual respect. What stands out most in enduring friendships is accepting each other's unique traits, much like the easy-going narrator and her more selective best friend here. Their contrasting attitudes toward plans and activities—one always ready to try new things, the other comfortable saying no—resonate deeply with many of us. Friendships thrive not by uniformity but by embracing differences and supporting each other unconditionally. Besides having fun together, having a friend who can honestly express when they’re not up for something builds trust over time. It also teaches valuable lessons about personal boundaries and communication. This balance ensures that no one feels pressured or overwhelmed, preserving the friendship’s harmony for years. Maintaining such a meaningful friendship means making room for growth and change while holding onto shared memories. Whether it’s meeting over coffee, reminiscing about childhood days, or simply being there during life’s ups and downs, these moments cement the bond, making it stronger than ever. For those wondering how to nurture their long-term friendships, the key is openness, patience, and appreciating each other’s individuality. Knowing when to say “yes” and when to say “no” respectfully is often what keeps friendships both joyful and sustainable. This story beautifully captures that dynamic, serving as a heartwarming reminder of how special true friends really are.
