Was I Travelling With My Friend… Or Her Boyfriend? 🤔
One thing that started bothering me during this trip wasn’t even the arguments or awkward moments.
It was the fact that almost every conversation somehow led back to:
“My boyfriend said…”
“My boyfriend recommended…”
“My boyfriend told me…”
“My boyfriend thinks…”
At first, I thought nothing of it.
Of course people update their partners when they’re overseas.
That’s completely normal.
But by Day 4, I realised most of our conversations revolved around what her boyfriend said or wanted.
And honestly, I started feeling like a third wheel on a trip that only had two people. 😅
One example was the night I wasn’t feeling well.
She initially didn’t seem comfortable going out alone.
Fair enough.
But after talking to her boyfriend, she decided to go anyway.
Nothing wrong with that.
It just made me realise how much influence he had over almost every decision.
Whether it was where to go.
What to eat.
What to do next.
There always seemed to be a “my boyfriend said…”
Eventually I found myself wondering:
Am I travelling with my friend?
Or am I travelling with my friend and a remote-control version of her boyfriend? 📱😂
Maybe that’s just how some couples work.
But personally, when I travel with a friend, I want to experience the trip with that friend.
Not feel like every decision needs approval from someone who’s not even on the trip.
And honestly, that was the point where I started feeling a little disconnected from the whole experience.
