I molded all of my hair into one small bun after doing some flat twists in the front of my hair, then I added about pack and a 1/2 of hair to scrunchie/twist tie, then I started crocheting about 2 1/2 packs of hair through my hair.

In the back to make it look like it had been braided down for a half up half down look.

And last the hair I crocheted onto the twist tie I put that over my bun took a few braids and wrapped around the base of my ponytail and secured w/bobby pins…which resulted in a seamless half up half down crochet style!

... Read moreHey beauties! So, you're loving the idea of a half up half down crochet style as much as I do? After sharing my quick tutorial, I wanted to dive a little deeper and give you all my secret tips and tricks to truly master this versatile look. It might seem a bit daunting at the START, but trust me, with these pointers, you'll be rocking a flawless half up half down crochet in no time! First off, let's talk about preparation. A good foundation is crucial. Before you even think about installing crochet hair, make sure your natural hair is clean, deep conditioned, and thoroughly moisturized. I usually do a clarifying wash, a protein-rich deep conditioner, and then blow-dry or stretch my hair to make it easier to manage. Don't forget your edges! A good edge control applied before you start braiding or twisting will keep your sleek look intact. Next, choosing your crochet hair is key. The beauty of half up half down crochet braids is the variety. You can use pre-looped braids, twists, faux locs, or even loose wavy/curly hair. Think about the final look you're aiming for. For a more defined, braided half up half down look, pre-braided or twisted hair works wonderfully. If you want a softer, more voluminous style, go for loose waves or curls. I always recommend getting a few extra packs than you think you'll need, just in case! When it comes to installation beyond the basics, here are some insights: Sectioning: For that perfect half up half down split, use a rat-tail comb to create a clean, crisp horizontal part from ear to ear. This ensures your "up" section is neat and your "down" section falls beautifully. Braiding Pattern: While flat twists work well for the front, for the back, I often opt for small to medium cornrows braided straight back. This provides a flat, secure base for your crochet hair and prevents bulkiness. Ensure your braids aren't too tight to avoid tension. Securing the Updo: My original tutorial mentioned adding hair to a scrunchie/twist tie, but another great tip is to create a small, neat cornrow or two around the perimeter of your bun base. This gives you extra points to crochet into, making your bun feel super secure and seamless. You can also use a strong hair tie and then wrap some crochet strands around it to hide it completely. Bobby pins are your best friend here for holding everything firmly in place. Blending: If you're leaving some of your natural hair out around your edges or part, ensure it blends seamlessly with the crochet hair. A little mousse or edge control can help. Some people even lightly curl their natural leave-out to match the texture of the crochet hair. Finally, maintenance will keep your half up half down crochet style looking fresh. At night, always tie your hair down with a silk or satin bonnet or scarf to prevent frizz and preserve the style. Lightly spritz your scalp with a diluted leave-in conditioner or a natural oil blend every few days to keep your scalp moisturized and prevent itching. You can gently cleanse your scalp with witch hazel on a cotton ball if needed. This style can typically last anywhere from 3-6 weeks with proper care. Don't be afraid to experiment with styling variations too! Once you have your half up half down crochet base, you can switch up the top bun to a high ponytail, a messy bun, or even add some decorative hair clips or scarves. The possibilities are endless for making this look uniquely yours. I hope these extra tips help you create and rock your most fabulous half up half down crochet braids yet! You got this!
