Day 1387- at Rascal Ridge (our little self-sustaining homestead.) Not a bad day indeed!
After coffee and hound dog yoga, I got to work in the garden most of the day 😍, I’m so proud of this little garden because most the stuff growing, came back on its own! I used real. good. seeds. And I’ve made real. good. soil. (Nothing grows outside of the garden, ask the chickens who love to eat the grass seed I keep trying to hide from them.😮💨)
I’m most proud of the compost we have all been working on for an entire year. It is black and fluffy and thriving with earth worms so I went ahead and spread it around the plants I want to help grow.
I Harvested a whole bucket of my first garlic EVER! 🙌🏼🙌🏼 Gonna make some honey garlic with it cause we take it religiously around here, time to go honey shopping! I also planted a few new herbs it got locally grown.
Most of the garden is from Seeds I grew myself.
The dogs and I took a summer bath, and now we hanging out with the homies.
PS- Sorry I been mia! I’ve been writing all these wild and wonderful true stories down every chance I get.
I CANT WAIT TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL WHAT CAROLINES BEEN UP TO in the RASCAL RIDGE books!

Living a self-sustaining homestead life truly transforms your connection with nature and your daily routines. From personal experience, I've found that dedicating time to nurturing your garden, especially by creating high-quality compost, is one of the most rewarding practices. Composting not only enriches the soil with vital nutrients but also promotes earthworm activity, which naturally aerates the soil and helps plants thrive. Starting seeds from your own garden and seeing them grow year after year creates a gratifying cycle of sustainability. It's amazing how many plants can regrow on their own when you’ve cultivated nutrient-rich soil and used good seeds. Protecting your garden from curious chickens or other animals can be challenging, but using natural deterrents or fencing works well to keep your plants safe. Harvesting your very first garlic is an exciting milestone for any gardener. Garlic is versatile and healthy, and preparing homemade honey garlic is a delicious way to enjoy its health benefits daily. Supporting local growers by purchasing herbs adds diversity to your garden and supports your community. Beyond gardening, sharing your homestead story through writing can be very fulfilling. Documenting your experiences and adventures brings a personal touch to the self-sustaining lifestyle and connects you with others who share the same passion. It’s a wonderful way to inspire and learn from a community of like-minded individuals. Incorporating moments of relaxation like 'hound dog yoga' and summer baths with pets adds joy and balance to everyday life on the homestead. This blend of hard work and leisure keeps the spirit alive and the homestead thriving. Overall, embracing a self-sustaining lifestyle is more than just gardening; it’s about building a deeper relationship with the Earth, savoring the fruits of your labor, and celebrating the simple yet profound pleasures of life off the grid.
