How America’s primary wealth was built
When reflecting on how America's primary wealth was built, it’s important to consider the often underrepresented narratives of Black Americans. The economic foundations of the United States cannot be fully understood without acknowledging the forced labor and exploitation that fueled early wealth accumulation. For centuries, African Americans and their ancestors were integral to building industries, infrastructure, and economies from which the nation continues to benefit. In particular, the legacy of slavery and segregation created systemic inequities but also demonstrated resilience and entrepreneurial spirit within Black communities. For example, the Greenwood District in Tulsa, often called "Black Wall Street," was a thriving business hub before it was destroyed in the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. This history reveals both the potential of Black wealth and the challenges imposed by racial violence and discrimination. Personal experience sharing also highlights the importance of understanding history beyond textbooks. Many families today uncover stories passed down through generations of struggle, survival, and success despite oppression. These narratives challenge the simplified idea that wealth in America was built solely through free-market efforts or European colonization. Recognizing these contributions during Black History Month offers an opportunity to educate ourselves and others about the deep connections between race, labor, and wealth. By doing so, we can foster a more inclusive and accurate understanding of American history and economics, ultimately promoting equity and informed dialogue about wealth redistribution and reparative justice initiatives. Understanding that "we were more than enslaved" helps shift the conversation to acknowledge ongoing efforts to reclaim economic power and representation. Learning from these histories not only honors those who endured but also inspires current and future generations to continue building wealth and opportunities within their communities.
