One of the most common and often unspoken challenges in our relationships with others is the tendency to expect them to behave or think like we do. This is beautifully and simply captured in the phrase, "My biggest problem is I keep expecting me from other people." From personal experience, this expectation can lead to disappointment and misunderstanding because we often forget that everyone has their own unique perspectives, experiences, and ways of reacting to situations. When I first became aware of this tendency in myself, it was through repeated instances where I felt let down by friends or colleagues who didn’t act in ways I would have or didn’t meet my unstated expectations. It felt frustrating, as if they were intentionally making choices that hurt or confused me. Over time, I learned that this frustration stemmed more from my own assumptions than their actions. Accepting that others are not reflections of ourselves but individuals has greatly improved my relationships. It helped reduce unrealistic expectations and allowed me to appreciate people’s differences rather than expect conformity. It also led me to communicate more clearly about my needs instead of silently assuming others would know or share my outlook. Managing these expectations requires patience and empathy. When you notice yourself expecting 'yourself' from others, take a step back and remind yourself of their distinct personality and context. Asking open, non-judgmental questions can also create mutual understanding. This approach fosters healthier connections and opens up space for growth, both within yourself and your relationships. Ultimately, understanding that expecting others to mirror us can be a source of conflict is the first step toward more authentic interactions. Embracing differences rather than expecting sameness helps us cultivate tolerance and deeper bonds with those around us.
