Aperture and f Stops

5/23 Edited to

... Read moreWhen I first started exploring aperture settings in photography, I was amazed by how drastically it could change the look and feel of my images. Using a smaller aperture like f11 or even f20 not only increases the depth of field but also helps in creating those eye-catching sun stars—or starbursts—that add a dramatic effect to your photos. From my experience, achieving sun stars is all about the light source and aperture combination. I usually look for a bright light source like the sun peeking through tree branches or buildings during sunrise or sunset. Setting your lens to a narrow aperture like f13 or f20, as in some of the examples captured with the Sony ILCE-7M3 camera and a 16-28mm f/2.8 lens, helps to produce sharp sun rays radiating from the light source. The small aperture blades cause the diffraction of light, which creates the star effect. To enhance your sun star shots, try adjusting your camera’s ISO to a low setting such as ISO 400 to maintain image quality, and use a shutter speed that balances exposure—starting around 1/50s to 1/320s depending on your lighting conditions. Handheld shots might require faster shutter speeds, but a tripod can give you more flexibility. One tip I found very helpful is to experiment with different focal lengths; wide-angle lenses (16-28mm) often accentuate sun stars more dramatically due to their broader field of view. It’s also important to watch for lens flare that might reduce contrast—using a lens hood or strategically positioning the camera angle can help minimize it. In Clarksville, where natural lighting can be quite vivid, taking early morning or late afternoon shots with these aperture settings gave me excellent sun star effects. Ultimately, patience and practice with aperture adjustments can make a big difference, and I encourage you to try stopping down beyond f11 to explore your creative possibilities in photography.
