Homestyle Chicken and Dumplings
My husband craves comfort food constantly. Dont get me wrong, we enjoy our fair share of experimental and fun dinners, but what gets recommend the most are the pastas, dumplings, and stroganoffs! This recipe for chicken and dumplings is perfection. Whether you are sick and need a pick-me-up or you just want a hug in a bowl, this recipe will do the trick.
What you need from the store:
- 🐓 chicken (I used thighs, breast would be better)
- 🌼 2 cups flour
- 🥛 1 cup milk
- 🍰 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 🧈 2 tbsp butter
- 🧅 onion
- 🫛 peas and 🥕 carrots
- 🥣 8 cups of broth
- 🧂 salt, pepper, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, and onion powder.
What you want to do:
1️⃣. Season your chicken with all the seasonings except Italian. I would suggest more chicken than I used! You could even shred up a rotisserie. Cook it till it is done and shred it.
2️⃣. Make the dumplings. Cut the butter into cubes and add to the flour + baking powder mix. Add some salt and pepper to this as well. Mix together with the milk (I get in dirty and use my hands lol 😂).
3️⃣. Roll out the dough using a rolling pin. Add flour to the table to make sure it does not stick. Once rolled out, cut into squares using a pizza cutter.
4️⃣. Sauté the veggies. Season them with all 5 salts and spices! They should taste good on their own before moving forward.
5️⃣. Add the 2 boxes of broth. You can also add the shredded chicken to the pot. Add seasoning to your taste. Get it to a slow boil.
6️⃣. Add the dumplings in. They only need to cook for about five minutes!
7️⃣. Let cool and serve!
This is comfort in a bowl. You may have noticed I have square and circle dumplings. That is because when I screw up the square ones I roll them in a ball haha! This is one that is on our “go to” recipe list. I hope it makes yours too 💖.

Chicken and dumplings is a classic comfort dish beloved across many American households, often evoking feelings of warmth and nostalgia. To elevate this homestyle recipe, consider using bone-in chicken thighs for richer flavor and tenderness. Chicken broth quality greatly impacts the taste; using brands like Swanson or homemade broth adds depth. When making dumplings, incorporating baking powder ensures they puff up perfectly, while adding a bit of butter to the flour mix enhances richness. Seasoning is essential for a balanced flavor. Combining salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning brings a harmonious blend that complements the chicken and vegetables. Sautéing onions, peas, and carrots not only adds nutritional value but also layers of taste and texture. Cooking the chicken thoroughly before shredding ensures tender bite-sized pieces that meld well in the broth. For a versatile twist, shredded rotisserie chicken can be used to save time without sacrificing flavor. Remember to taste and adjust the seasoning as the dish simmers to your preference. Dumplings require just a brief five-minute cook for a soft, chewy texture—avoid overcooking to prevent them from becoming soggy. This recipe represents more than just a meal; it's a bowl of comfort that can be customized to suit your pantry or dietary needs.
